Our favourite turbaned madman Mark Sultan has not one but two albums on In the Red this year. I’ve listened to both, and I think the material on ‘Whenever I want’ is stronger than 'Whatever I want’ and neither is as strong as $. This particular song though, can be the anthem for a lot of people in my generation.
“Sultan– who has pilfered from doo-wop, early-1960s rock and R&B, punk, garage, and plenty of other styles– isn’t a guy with a limited palate, so maybe he didn’t want to be limited to one time period or sound or idea. In this sense, and others, Whatever/Whenever is a grab bag.” Pitchfork
