Downtempo / Folk compilation

I mentioned the Finnish folk/nujazz band Korpi Ensemble on yesterday’s radioshow review, yet just to show you how much I love this song, I featured it once again, so make sure you listen to it. Vocalist Johanna Iivanainen’s singing is very emotional, but of the inspirational and lively kind rather than the melancholic. I’m sure you’ll love this song and proceed to buy their CD Puu

Contrasting the hopeful tunes of Korpi is Sickoakes which is a band that “consists of a, at most times, six man strong orchestra playing instrumental, cinematic music best categorized under the genre of postrock“, on Type Records. This song has a touching guitar performance very melancholic, even downright sad, spectacular.
The next track is from the remastered edition of The Tree People’s self titled album on Tiliqua. With their own words “Tiliqua Records is psyched about being able to present a whole new audience and generation with the lysergic beauty of the Tree People’s sole recorded artifact, a privately released acid folk gem out of 1979. In times when people are all getting excited about media-created scenes like “New Weird America” and “Freak Folk”, they seem to overlook the fact that such music was already being created decades ago. The Tree People is evidence of such a splash of creativity that sadly enough was doomed to disappear within the cracks of obscurity.” Agreed, great steel guitar madness.
Jamie Woon - Wayfaring Stranger
UK artist Jamie Woon, who was last year voted by Gilles Peterson as the best newcomer, has his debut EP out on Live Recordings. The obvious comparison to Jamie Lidell’s Motown singing is inevitable and this song seems to be a traditional folk song, modernized by him, I’ve already played his original version in one of the shows, very melancholic song as signified by its title. Here I’ve featured the Burial mix, with his signature dubstep sound and 2-step drums, Burial’s mix stresses the melancholy even more, but the song his singing fits other sounds as well, as demonstrated by Stitch’s modern jazzy downtempo take. I’m a little bit let down, (contrary to everyone saying it might be Burial’s best effort) by the Burial mix because the drums & sound are basically the same as before, to tell the truth I was expecting more after last years sensational album. Anyways it’s still a great song.
