Mozart with a Mullet
Experimental soundscape / electronic netlabel Frozen Elephant has their 13th release out, this time by Stretchandrelax a project of Elise Ladoué and Félicia Atkinson. Not unlike AGF’s experiments with vocal and soundscapes, Stretchandrelax explores micro spaces via “field recordings, beats, spoken words and instrumentation”.
Pedro Pedreiro
For some reason listened to this one three times in a row, and now off to the fourth time because I found the lyrics. Timeless Chico Buarque composition sung by the ladies of Quarteto em Cy. Off their self titled album from 1966.
Golau Glau
Just had a mail in our inbox that read “Golau Glau” are two of our favourite words that go well together. We formed at the beginning of June and have had airplay on Xfm and Radio Wales. We like Wales and cats, and whales but not Cats.”
Morricone
Off Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack for 1972’s Chi l’ha vista morire?. Young Female choir singing an impeccable tune in canons.
Stacy Epps
Atlanta soul sister Stacy Epps just grabbed attention thanks to Gilles Peterson’s evercool selection on Brownswood Bubblers. Her soulful vocals on Floatin’ are a big highlight of this wonderful compilation.
In the mailbox: Sep 2008
More good stuff that hit our mailboxes in September were:
* Release no.7 from Munich based Jazz & Milk records.
* 3rd album from UK based composer and singer Simon Bookish.
* 40th release on the Italian Dharmasound netlabel.
San Valentino
For all you kids who don’t buy into the St. Valentine’s consumer festivities, here’s 2 love songs that you can enjoy. The first is by the mighty Baba Zula, who’s one of the handful of internationally notable artists coming out of Istanbul. It’s a shame I haven’t written about their new album, but let this be a start.
Own records
Own Records from Luxembourg (whom we mentioned here before), home to acts like Bexar Bexar, Uzi & Ari and Gregor Samsa humbled us with an elegantly designed double CD of a new project by Portland based Aaron Gerber.
