One of last year’s best kept secrets was Mancunian trumpeter Matthew Halsall’s sophomore album Colour Yes on Gondwana.

Can’t remember where I read about Steve Lehman’s 2007 effort, might be on Allaboutjazz or Downtown, but I was intrigued to see this 28 year old (same age as me!) saxophonist named on top of best album charts. So I hunted down his “On Meaning” album on Pi Recordings.

One of Poland’s finest jazz exports of recent, alongside Tomasz Stanko Quartet and Sing Sing Penelope which shares two members with CNQ and hopefully will be featured here soon. I’m sorry to have listened to this album in December and this month mainly, else it would have been in my 2006 list most definitely.
