Our friend Fuchs from Dinamo 103.8 has just unearthed a talent in the form of his uncle Erkut Şahinbaş. An avid jazz listener, his one hour mix with help from Fuchs himself is part one of a 2 part series, the next one “For Jammers” to follow next week. This one is “For Lovers”!

Two albums that I’ve been procrastinating over for a few months, Vijay Iyer’s Historicity and Ben Allison’s Think Free has been topping nearly all the noteworthy jazz lists. Historicity is the effort of a piano trio with Stephan Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums, but it’s not a standard piano jazz album.

Two prolific names from the experimental electro-acoustic scene Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek has just released Blank Grey Canvas Sky on the Swedish Fang Bomb label. Spanning 6 songs and 43 minutes Blank Grey Canvas Sky is a meticulous embroidery of pianos, instrumentation and drones.

Member of a new generation of romantic pianists Hauschka, alongside Sylvain Chaveau, Goldmund (aka Helios), and Max Richter have been quite prominent, putting emotion and quiet introspection in the center of compositions..

The connection tying this to the previous NYC jazz posts is his regular sidekick Joey Baron who is a pillar of the Masada clique and Joe Lovano on tenor who tries to fill Coltrane’s shoes with quite a success.

The Young 12 string guitar master James Blackshaw takes on piano in another enchanting album of five songs spanning 50 minutes. The piano pieces are cool, yet we still prefer him fingerpicking his guitar.

Through Moonlit Windows is the new EP of When Tides Collide, a project by Carlos R. Andujar which was started with the intention of creating music, sound, or noise for the purpose of sleep accompaniment.

Released last month on the ever-amazing 12 Rec netlabel Through All These Years of Trying To Belong is the collaborative work of netlabel veteran Emil Klotzsch and bass clarinettist Ruediger Krey.
