Here’s an alternative start to the week, a smorgasbord, no a storm of wild styles by two master musicians, the prolific guitarist Keiji Haino and Ruins drummer Yoshida Tatsuya. Released on Tzadik “Uhrfasudhasdd” is the follow up to New Rap and it’s only for experienced noise/improv heads. Handle with care! It can mess up your monday. Review by Urufixx only in Turkish!

“Kaleidoscopic Equinox”, the first proper studio LP from Motion Turns it On is scheduled to be released February 2010 on Chocolate Lab Records. Explosive Math-Post Rock & Jazz from the genre’s Motherland, Chicago.

Brooklyn guitar & drum duo Noxious Foxes has just self released their debut LP Lovestorm. It seems guitar & drums duos are one of the more resilient setups with mathrock bands these days. Guitarist Justin Talbott and drummer Richard Levengood apparently used to play in a band called Jack Bauer from 2002-2006 and they regrouped in early 2009 as a duo. A year’s work is now released as an LP, but being part of the new generation, they’ve made the digital donationware. Their music is a balanced combination of loud shapeshifting riffs and drumming, what you’d come to expect from a math rock band, with a little touch of Karate style sophistication. Gripping compositions, this band needs to be heard more.

It’s like a full moon madness when one of your favourite bands has a new release on your favourite label. Asheville, NC power trio Ahleuchatistas‘ (pronounciation tip : the name comes from the Charlie Parker song “Ah-leu-cha”) fifth full length called Of the Body Prone is hands down the best mathcore/improv album this year to grace your speakers, and it might be the most balanced of their full buffet. Ahleuchatistas takes math rock’s erratic features to extreme levels while retaining melody and musicality, only to destroy it a few bars later and found something new. For the untrained ear it might be hard to follow, because of the hectic pace, but repeat listens put forth the complexity and compositional power. There’s a whole bunch of intellectualism on reviews, name dropping Gödel, Deleuze and Adorno, you might head to their myspace if you want to delve further into theory, but these two lines are enough talk about the music, say I.

Our fifth album mixes improvisation and tightly controlled jump cut composition, and is the debut album for drummer Ryan Oslance. Tight looseness, loose tightness, fresh sounds, fresh directions. Progress. Our richest recording to date.

I sat down to write a post about the new LP from French hip-hop trio Jazz Liberatorz, yet I after half an hour of friendfeed banter, I realized that I’ve been rocking to NYC klezmer-math-jazz power trio Rashanim for the time being and thinking obsessively about questions like if I will ever live to see them live somewhere, why on earth they aren’t better known or how to obtain the new Rashanim album NOW. After checking my RYM account for the umpteenth time to see if I have given them 5 stars, I realized my only option was to buy it from a site called thinkindie. Regardless of my financial failure, I valiantly pressed buy only to see that they don’t sell to TR. Well, what can I say apart from cursing the moment that someone first thought of using areacodes/national boundaries for digital media. Now I have to listen to Shalosh until I order a CD from Tzadik or stream the new album from Squidco (which apparently is acoustic :/) or Myspace. The second song is from Exil’s 1975 album Fusionen.

A great split sampler by Italy’s Africantape Records and Chicago’s Sickroom Records with lots of quirky math-rock, noise rock and other kinds of experimental rock from Them, Roaring Twenties, Bear Claw and Three Second Kiss who are currently supporting Shellac, L’ocell Mare solo project of Cheval de Frise guitarist Thomas Benvolet, Pink Mountain who just released their Sick Room debut soon, Aucan and more. Best of all it’s freely available from the coolest music website around, bandcamp.

+ Jazztimes interviews our idol John Zorn

It’s not an unusual thing for a creative person to be interested in creativity. People who grew up at the time that I did, in the ’60s, we loved all different musics. We loved rock, we loved jazz, we loved classical, we loved world music. We had a hunger for anything new. We’d make little mix tapes on cassette that had all these different styles of music. That was like a very special thing. We’d play them at parties. Now, that’s normal, that’s the iPod shuffle. Everybody listens that way now. So in that sense, we have really succeeded. It’s like our generation, our kind of impetus of loving all these different things, that is kind of the new way to listen to music.

Inspired by Sputnikmusic’s Math Rock Genre report I’ve selected a few math/instrumental rock tracks both old and new.

2 spots on my last.fm alltime list is occupied by Deerhoof and Marnie Stern. Yet even though there are new albums on Kill Rock Stars from both camps because I’ve been delaying their drafts everyday and it is about time I come clean that I won’t be able to write. Although they are by no means mediocre albums – in fact both albums are rated better than their previous albums everywhere – I wasn’t impressed with either as much as I thought I would.

Marnie’s debut was incredibly exciting for me, yet it feels like it’s more of the same with worse songs this time. Although if it’s your debut with Marnie she will undoubtedly amaze you. Deerhoof’s been doing their spazz rock for the last few albums and it’s not breaking new ground either. I’ll be giving each album more time so I hope they grow on me. Hope I didn’t sound like a high school scener who eats bands for breakfast.

Checked through Sick Room’s audio page chock full of goodies from the 50+ albums in their back catalogue which spans across math/noise/indie rock and pop. This Chicago label who’s released Sleepytime Gorilla Museum & Cheval de Frise and Hella in the past surely deserves more love for their future projects.
