Zorn & Masada Quintet
Good news! There’s a new Zorn CD out on Tzadik called “O’o” which is named after an extinct Hawaiian bird and is the follow up to The Dreamers. There’s also a new and unplugged Rashanim CD out to quench our thirst after a yearning period of 3 years, and if that’s not enough, there are two new releases by Koby Israelite and Cyro Baptista.
5 star monday
After years of being a PC poweruser I’ve bought a macbook and changed ranks a few weeks ago. I’ve since become an itunes user after ditching my ultimate music playing setup of winamp & copernic desktop search, and I can’t say I’m happy at all. Seems the rating stars are the only welcomed addition and to commemorate this here are five 5 star tunes.
Masada : Medeski, Martin & Wood / SC3
For some reason I’ve skipped Xaphan from The 2nd Masada Songbook on Tzadik. I thought this year’s invincible Bar Kokhba Sextet release was the first one yet indeed Trey Spruance’s madmen Secret Chiefs 3 were the first to step up to that holy task of getting 16 bar sheets of music from John Zorn and crafting them into their own creations.
Undomondo Radio Show #24
For all the balkan & klezmer fans out there, this one goes out to you. It’s not one of my best shows i must admit, but i’ve been trying to tone the musical variety down in these last shows, attempting to make more wholesome shows and i hope in time i’ll get better at it.
A Hawk and a Hacksaw & Hun Hangar Ensemble
We’ve already mentioned this year’s most exciting lineup on Leaf where A Hawk and a Hacksaw meet with the Hun Hangar Ensemble lead by Béla Ágostone master of Hungarian folk music & jazz and a multi instrumentalist playing Hungarian bagpipes, clarinet, alto saxophone, taragoto, viola.
Kletka Red
Do you like Klezmer music? Are you also a fan of high intensity in your face speed punk metal? Then this album is for you. Kletka Red’s “Hijacking” came out in 1996 on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. It’s Klezmer on crank.
