This weekend we’ll be hosting Phillip Lauer & CB Funk collectively known with their African persona Arto Mwambe. Last year’s Resident Advisor set was amazing, tune in if you haven’t caught it already back then, and if you’re around Istanbul, make sure you drop by minimuzikhol, tonight or tomorrow. Next weekend we’ll be hosting the nudisco don from Zagreb, Ilija Rudman.

There are some new additions to our blogroll and a few touches to the design after I realized how much it sucked. I’ll be editing it more until I can get Boran to help me with a brand new redesign.

Our good friends at Soul Clap have released a free EP of rnb edits. Aptly titled the FreE.P., this 3 song EP is all “dancefloor tested” material. We trust ‘em with our hearts, just check out how they transformed Aaliyah’s Rock the Boat into a funky deep house hit.

Just received this one from Bear Funk. Soirée, labelowner Stevie Kotey’s new project with Max Essa is a real beast that fuses all the good bits from balearic house, disco, funk and anything soulful. The title tune “Zim Zim Zar Zar”, a freaky minimalist arabesque house piece with Max Essa uttering magical nonsense a la Sim Sala Bim, is an instant classic. “Overgroomed” has just the right amount of lazyness you want your dancefloor to always have. “Day to Day Life” has amazing spoken bits by Max Essa on top of an unstoppable cinematic groove. Highly versatile album with top quality songwriting from head to toe – something you rarely get from dance albums these days – you should definitely give it a go.

Have to give it to Lawrence, he’s one of the last remaining electronic & minimal house producers who can put out albums that are consistent as a full length, suitable for home listening and musically satisfying, and we’ve overlooked his newest album “Until then, goodbye”. German producer Peter Kersten has been active since the beginning of the 2000s with releases on his own Dial, as well as the kult Ladomat 2000, and remixes on a dearth of labels like Kompakt and Italic both as Lawrence and as Sten. After countless releases he’s truly matured as a composer of dark minimal soundscapes occasionally sprinkled with melodies from vibes and glockenspiel. Read a good track by track analysis on Resident Advisor and give him a spin if you’re looking for that one minimal house/techno/electronic album that won’t bore you to death.

A Lawrence album is a rare thing in dance music; in that it contains rivulets of soul and melancholy that permeate the gorgeous open spaces afforded by his spartan arrangements. That’s not to say that soul and melancholy aren’t rare in this genre, but to have them intertwine with each other with such delicious ease is. Bleep43

Three big names to choose from, if you wanna rock out in Istanbul tonight.

First up is Joe Lovano Us Five @ CRR as part of the Akbank Jazz Festival. 57 year old Lovano has been one of the leading tenor sax players for the last twenty years. This year he even filled up for Zorn’s alto in the Masada Quintet. His Us Five quintet also has Esperanza Spalding playing the bass and pianist James Weidman. Bad news though, the concert is already sold out.

The next two are Friday night party acts. Italian producer Bottin rose to prominence after releasing stuff on Bear Funk and Italians do it Better. He’s part of the bearded space/italo disco/nudisco crew. Tonight at Indigo.

Also in Istanbul tonight is Brendan Moeller aka Beat Pharmacy. Moeller is famed for his spaced out dubby house productions. I’ve never heard him DJ though, but with Crystal you can’t go wrong. Previously on undomondo.

Our favourite British disco steamrollers Horse Meat Disco just had a new Beats in Space session last week. Here’s the tracklist, don’t miss the second half if you’d like to hear Aeroplane playing Italo.

Ed DMX, sole member of Rephlex’s electro giant DMX Krew selects 20 of the best Acid House tunes for FACT Magazine. He’s such a knowledgeable guy when it comes to remembering dates, events and people; reading Acid House history from him is like listening to a WW2 veteran or something. Read the feature / stream the songs, and don’t miss Ed’s podcasts, which are always amazing.

In those days Brick Lane market was mostly a place to find people selling things like a single shoe, or a dead person’s dentures, or possibly a nicked mountain bike, but nestling among all the junk I came across two boxes of brand new dead stock records selling for a couple of quid each. In one box were copies of the Jack Trax compilation album Acid House and in the other, the Westside double LP We Call It Hallucinates. I snapped them up, took them home and got submerged in the sounds of Phuture, Armando, Liddell Townsell and the rest.

01: DJ PIERRE : ‘BOX ENERGY’ : (from ACID TRAX VOL.2, 1988)

I DJ’d with Pierre in around 2002 and he played awful tunes like ‘Lady Hear Me Tonight’. Afterwards I went over and said, “Thanks for Acid House, mate,” or words to that effect, and he replied, “That was a long time ago.” Not interested. Shame really. Anyway, nuff respect.

08: 808 STATE : ‘FLOW COMA’ : (from NEWBUILD, CREED, 1988)

Before Gerald Simpson left 808 State and became ‘A Guy Called…’ he helped them create the first and possibly the only UK acid house tracks worthy of comparison with those from Chicago. Given how badly 808 fell off after his departure – especially in comparison to the strength of his early solo classics such as ‘Voodoo Ray’ and ‘Blow Your House Down’ – it’s easy to imagine that he probably made this track more or less solo.

Just gave my thesis to the uni for the umpteenth time, it’s not completely out of my life, but I’ll have more time to write next week for sure. Today some mixes that have been piling in my bookmarks folder.
