What the mailbox brought in May
I’ve been quite slow in dealing with PR mails and requests this month because of my finals period (like I’m so quick otherwise!) there’s been some decent submissions and here I’ll try to mention some of my selections. More submission stuff to follow
soon, don’t hesitate to send your stuff.
Sir Salvatore, is playful indie [...]
Metropolitan Jazz Affair
I’ve hinted you last week that there was an exceptional new Metropolitan Jazz Affair CD released on Infracom the label that gave us acts like Marschmellows, Aromabar, [Re:Jazz]. I had heard praises for their eponymous debut yet haven’t been able to listen to it, so I didn’t miss the second chance. The quartet featuring Benjamin [...]
Kanka - Alert
Let me tell you first that I began to laugh instantly after I saw the name of the artist, why? Because “Kanka” is a funny (sometimes shady) way of saying bro in Turkish slang, which literally is the first letters of Blood Brother mashed together. But then seeing the artist is from France, I thought [...]
Exchpoptrue
I had lost interest in the electroclash and electropop genre, right after the start of the glam and the glitz. However thanks to Exchpoptrue on Popcorn Lab, I’m now back into roboglam and I’m feeling younger now. The band feels very dynamic thanks to gritty italo disco basslines by Christian Bouyjou and what’s better than [...]
Elsie
“Elsie is a label project, between musicians friends, to represent our differences and experiences, to help and support eachother… friendly, to share materials and time, to create sounds, to organise some events”. A small label, not even a proper label I suppose much more a project, it’s highly avantgarde and experimental but accessible. Bettamga has [...]
Zwicker / Bertrand Lajudie
Swiss artist Zwicker aka Tweak’s new 12″ “Sniff and Sneeze” has 3 tracks of urban house. I really don’t like the trendy electro-house genre but this isn’t your run-of-the-mill electro dancefloor burner, this has got some organic and deep discoish quality as well, no wonder it’s on Compost.
Second track of today is from French [...]
Zimpala
Zimpala is the brainchild of DJ Fred BNX. A 6 piece band from France, that makes elegant easy listening pop music with all kinds of different influences like nu-jazz, lounge and easy listening. Singer Noémie Brosset is capable of singing and finding melodies in both french and english, and I’ve decided to choose one from [...]
Trio Romano Sclavis Texier
Continuing the jazz vibe on undomondo, I’ve decided to choose this French trio’s last album for a quick review. Aldo Romano, Louis Sclavis and Henri Texier are 3 major French contemporary jazz figures, and this album is the final chapter of the African journey that started 10 years ago.
Fedayi Pacha
Fedayi Pacha has been on my tracklist for a few months, but the time to post about him has just come. I first heard about him on a French dub compilation featuring him and Zenzile among others. Then I got his album Dub Works, out on Hammerbass a French Label. The music is what you [...]
Tokow Boys and Erik Truffaz
2 exotic and eclectic songs for today.
The first is off a Tigersushi compilation. This is the only track I’ve ever listened from Tokow Boys, but surprisingly (or maybe not?) they’re a french techno-pop band from early 80s. Weird, hard to categorize exotic post-punk song with a strange vocal, that sounds like French mixed with Japan.
