Pedro Pedreiro
For some reason listened to this one three times in a row, and now off to the fourth time because I found the lyrics. Timeless Chico Buarque composition sung by the ladies of Quarteto em Cy. Off their self titled album from 1966.
Larkin Grimm
The air around the Appalachian mountains seem to be infested with forest spirits that tell you how to cook up the most simple and amazing melodies that the best producers in the world can’t come up with try as they might. Larkin Grimm, a native of Memphis, Tennessee who lived in a hippie commune till she was 7 is a real life example that comes straight from Shyamalan’s “The Village“
Eglantine Gouzy
After all these years, I know that the blogosphere doesn’t have an attention span of more than a few days so whatever you present should either be shit hot or totally vintage, effectively rendering albums from say, 2006 out of sight. Today we make an exception for Eglantine Gouzy a lesser known bedroom pop artist from Paris.
Stacy Epps
Atlanta soul sister Stacy Epps just grabbed attention thanks to Gilles Peterson’s evercool selection on Brownswood Bubblers. Her soulful vocals on Floatin’ are a big highlight of this wonderful compilation.
Silje Nes
I’ve been listening on/off to the UK release of Norwegian singer-songwriter Silje Nes‘ Ames Room released on Fat-Cat, and it’s about time to talk a little bit about her music now that the European release of her debut is due.
Misha
Misha, the New York duo consisting of Ashley Yao and John Chao which has previously released a limited 12″ on the German Tomlab has released their debut “Teardrop Sweetheart” and it’s a sweet home listening electronic pop album. Nothing groundbreaking or new here but there’s a 11 short & catchy pop songs which mix together well with John’s deep electronic easy listening stuff.
Nostalgia 77
As promised a few posts ago here’s the spanking new new LP from Benedic Lamdin aka Nostalgia 77. It’s a shame I haven’t listened to his previous efforts, nor have I heard that he has won the Jazz Album Of The Year at the BBC Radio One Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards.
Afrirampo
If you’ve never heard of their name, they have taken the riot-grrrl vocals and mixed them up with freestyle non-compositions and raw noise aesthetics, Japanese style. Here’s 2 short songs from their 2005 album Kore Ga Mayaku Da on Tzadik and some live videos of them wreaking havoc on Youtube.
