This week’s surpriser flew into our inbox from the duo Berry Weight. Music for Imaginary Movies is their debut on their own label Hypnophonic Records, and it’s apt in describing the music involved. Eleven full-fledged electronic downtempo songs with quality musicianship from Berry Weight, plus singers Astrid Engberg, clarinetist Kledsy Jy, and MCs Green-T & FP from ASM. It’s a solid album yet, the neoclassicist approach and the consonance gives the music an artificiality, not enough grit and tension/release perhaps? Frankly I would have preferred less polish and more dirt, as in real life, but it’s me. 3/5

The in-house gag about this show was that we were ready to work at the BRT (a fictional state owned radio station from Brasil that resembles our TRT) simply because it never wanders off brasileira & exotica, albeit a few breathers of downtempo jazz from Cecil Taylor and Marc Copland. Play this on sunny afternoons.

A sublime cerebral jazz mix for your Mind, by our collaborator Cenk Akyol. This is a seamless B&W trumpet jazz with some ethnic stylings, only down side? There’s no Bohren in it. Remarkable stuff.

Three songs today to please the eardrums of the funky and the soulful.

First one is from the upcoming 2CD Domu release on Tru Thoughts, called ‘One Offs, Remixes and B Sides’. Now, although Domu’s forte is broken beat, we all know that he can rock sister genres with equal ease. And so his remixes for Jazzanova, Maddslinsky and Cinematic Orchestra would tell, he’s been on the forefront of urban dance music for the last 5 years. This discoid remix to Quantic Soul Orchestra’s “Waiting For Your Touch” with Quantic’s laidback funky guitar work and Spanky Wilson on top form with the will probably be a crowdpleaser in this summer.

The second one is again off another upcoming Tru Thoughts release, the sophomore album of The Bamboos vocalist, Australian Kylie Auldist’s sophomore ‘Made Of Stone’. It’s produced by Lanu (Lance Ferguson also of The Bamboos) and it feels like a more electronic version of retro Bamboos funk and soul.

The last one is off First Word records 2009 debut 7″ by Kidkanevil collaborator Laura J Martin. Just look at her list of influences: Lalo Schifrin, Japanese folklore, Jethro Tull, Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann, Madlib and Neil Young very impressive!. She’s been providing the flutes to the Kidkanevil live show for some time and unsurprisingly this one features a very catchy and naive fluteline on top of instrumental beats and handclaps, and a kidkanevil remix on the flipside. Don’t forget that there’s also an upcoming kidkanevil release on First Word and you can listen to a sampler mix here.

I’ve been busy with my MA thesis increasingly for the last months and will be as well till the end of the month, so expect the posts to get more sporadic and shorter. I’ve been glued to the screen for the last 8 hours today and feel on the verge of collapse, so before I go out for a pint and a bit of PES, here’s a few songs from the lovely She had a taste for music compilation which features porngrooves from 70’s Italian low-budget porn movies bt producers
