Well, the second Anatolian Pop Night in Istanbul is about to take place on Wednesday. The debut concert with Derdiyoklar was extremely well received and I hope/think it will be no less for Osman İşmen and his Orchestra. He’s an acclaimed composer of old Turkish movie soundtracks and has also been an arranger for better known personalities like Zeki Müren, Bülent Ersoy, Nükhet Duru, Sezen Aksu, Nilüfer and even İbrahim Tatlıses. In the late 70’s he’s composed 4 albums of discofied Turkish songs and later on drifted into more jazzy ways with his “Eastern Jazz” albums. If you wanna tune into the Anatolian Pop revivalism, make sure you wear your fez and catch him at Babylon.

Ok, I think this will be the last post I’m doodling on 70s music for a while. I’ve mentioned Derdiyoklar before and now I wanna announce you that they will be having a gig in Istanbul next thursday.

Unlike other Turkish psychedelic stars of the time, Derdiyoklar made their name first and actually only among the “gastarbeiter” Turks in Germany. They played weddings and parties almost exclusively of Turkish workers and rural population; clung tightly to their Turkish roots, in the face of cultural shock and obvious social problems. Their lyrics converged around socio-political and cultural topics of the era.

Ali Ekber Aydoğan, the brains of the operation, was (and he still is) a progressive, so he forged these Turkish topics and traditional music with new forms that he was hearing in Europe at the time, creating a new musical genre named Diskofolk. This authentic fusion of Turkish immigrant culture in Germany, which for a long time has been dubbed banal by both Germans and Turks in the motherland, is a unique gem which deserves more publicity now. This gig will be the inauguration of an Anatolian Pop concert series, so stay tuned, if you are interested.

BTW, Derdiyoklar means something like “The Noproblems” which of course is quite the opposite of their lyrical content.

Ok, my last review for the time being is for our close friend Baris K. who took the dance scene by storm with his Eurasia mixes. The Eurasia sound focuses on forgotten Turkish classics of soul, funk, disco and Anatolian rock from the 70s.

Announcement

I’ll be leaving for Vienna in a few hours and I’ll be absent during the week, but as always I’ve packed a few punches before leaving. After some years you get burnt by blogging and writing reviews - which I never thought was my forte anyways - keeping an eye on undomondo was becoming a burden. I’m sure most of the readers don’t read reviews anyways now that there are a lot of music resources to keep up with. I know because I’m one of them as well. So instead of writing reviews a few times a week, I’ve made a new category called quickies, where I’ll be slapping a video and a song together with artist infos and pointers to reviews.

Now I feel great! and that’s the story of how I wrote about 10 quickies in a few hours.

Ok, my last review for the time being is for our close friend Baris K. who took the dance scene by storm with his Eurasia mixes. The Eurasia sound focuses on forgotten Turkish classics of soul, funk, disco and Anatolian rock from the 70s. This authentic blend of Anatolia has previously been only interesting to progheads but now it’s rejuvenated and ready for the dancefloor. This third mix unearths a whole new bunch of gems mostly reedited by himself. It was first broadcast on Beats in Space last week and it’s appreciated everywhere by vinyldiggers. Must give this a listen folks.

this tuesday we’ve got mixes from Baris K (Istanbul) and Kool DJ Dust (Stockholm) on the show. Baris has done the final mix in his Eurasia trilogy (Part 1 on Alianfinkielkrautrock and Part 2 on Lovefingers) for us. He’s been working on this last part of the trilogy for the past 6 months and it’s definitely worth the wait! It’s all Turkish oldskool psychedelic soul-disco-folk-rock. Look out for vinyl releases of his turkish edits coming soon. Beats in Space

Our friend Cenk Akyol mixes another quality mix; before coming back to Istanbul for a vacation after 2 years of living down under!.

Some other mixes :

* Another mix that Cenk digged on Awesome Tapes from Africa, is this some slow West African psychedelia and hypnotic guitars mix with no well-known names, which basically spells more treasure hunting. zshare.

* Sankofa mix; courtesy of Lovefingers, <del datetime="2008-12-07T21:20:58+00:00">Perlon boss and our friend Zip</del>, Disco Exota’s Zip mixes a terrific slow disco set.

* Got tipped by another friend from down under Tim Shiel on a spaced out mix produced by Tom Smith of Cleptoclectics, blending songs by artists like Tarentel, Alog, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lukid as well as their own. Get it here

* Beat Electric Guest Mix on Cosmic Disco (Specialising in Boogie, Rare Disco, Laser Soul and Proto House, wow!). Here’s the Beat Electric blog. 2 more great mixes on Cosmic Disco once again, first one by Stu and the other by Niles which includes rare gems from Spain, Peru, Italy and Australia.

* Soul Nation soul mix on 100 Limousines, downright incredible selection by collector/dealer Dave Withers. Don’t miss!

The Notwist’s main problem is this: they’re boring. They’re boring in the same way that Radiohead are boring. They represent, like the aforementioned coma inducers, Guardianista ‘tastefulness’. They are the acceptable face of left-field indie. The avant-garde rendered palatable to Jools Holland’s demographic. Their music is so pristine and perfect it’s rendered sterile, lifeless, and utterly pointless. The soundtrack to a sixth form college art teacher’s dinner party. I could never imagine any one – apart from maybe that art teacher– actually getting any enjoyment out of this record.

Please, can we face some facts? Mum. Animal Collective. Efterklang. The Notwist. Fuck (right off) Buttons. They’re all boring. They’re all safe. And we should stop pretending they’re anything but mediocre.

We’re quite stoked for the next Friday as we’re preparing for a huge event in Istanbul focused on te spooky instrument that is “theremin“. Starting with a biopic focusing on Leon Theremin’s life, meeting one of the foremost Theremin artists in the world right now, the classically trained Pamelia Kurstin who released an album on Tzadik last year. Performances by authentic Turkish acts, Baba Zula and Dinar Bandosu and partying the rest of the night with NY’s nudisco prince Daniel Wang and our local hero Barış K. It’s almost like a complete culture trip without leaving the comfort of your hometown!.
