Guess what, Detroit native Matthew Chicoine aka Recloose’s third album is out on Sonar Kollektiv, and no one on the blogosphere is talking about it according to hype machine. After a successful debut on Carl Craig’s Planet E and a sophomore on Peacefrog featuring the single Dust which was even featured on mainstream dance compilations, I thought his third offering would be making enough buzz that it didn’t need a shoulder from us. Yet, I was wrong!?, or perhaps the blogs aren’t the best place to look for this kind of music..

His idiosyncratic blend of electronic music with elements of soul, funk, house with driving brass and percussion is what made Dust an instant anthem and on Perfect Timing we see Recloose covering all flavours of the soul scala with due help from vocal talents of Fat Freddy’s Drop vocalist Jon Dukie, Tyna and others. Contemporary funk & house music for the urban soulistas, it appeals to a wide range of audience on the dancefloor or for home listening. Not groundbreaking stuff but with instant rewards, perfect for fans of Herbert, Moodymann and Jazzanova, I bet you’ll be singing along to some of these tunes in no time.

Soulphiction aka Jackmate aka Michael Baumann has a new album out on the indisposable Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv. How they manage to be both prolific and quality is beyond me, but I have to say they’re holding the standard for cool electronic dance scene nowadays. Baumann is a prolific artist like Sonar; I think he’s more famous under the dancefloor oriented Jackmate moniker yet his Soulphiction stuff (alongside Manmade Science) sounds better for me. “Do you overstand!?” has 14 tracks and it’s the perfect sequel to 2006’s “State Of Euphoria”. This one goes even further in ditching the glitchy minimal beats for more organic sounds and laidback stuff, moving away from the dancefloor to stripped down but soulful ways of Moodymann or Theo Parrish. The Detroit influence is much more evident in some more experimental tracks like “Velveteens“, and there’s much much more than simple 4/4 dance music; taking from jazz & hiphop as well making this a quality leftfield longplayer. Fear not though! even the laidback ones are gonna make you shake your hips. Best electronic/dance album of the year yet!?.

* Seattle singer-songwriter Andy Liotta

Here are some of the highlights that arrived at our inbox in the last month or so:

* New Thrill Parade’s noisy, piss’d and dark 3rd album is coming out on Wonder Quest soon. The sludgy beginning of the track made this an instant fave but the theatrical vocals (a la a gothed-up Tiger Lillies) sealed the deal. Band to watch!.

* Wait til the ice melts, compilation on Exponential is an emerging artists from Texas sampler which is mostly electronic music with hiphopish beats. I quite liked the jazzy cut-up Diego track, Horizontal K’s URAQTK and the opener by A.M. Architect. For fans of Prefuse 73 etc.

* 16 year old indie pop sensation Please Quiet Ourselves with some clumsy freak-pop. Nothing groundbreaking, but still better than most of the teenpop stuff.

* Seattle singer-songwriter Andy Liotta is the The Billie Burke Estate I almost never listen to pop-rock, yet I gave it a spin after it came into my inbox and it’s ok. Also the proof that I try to listen to everything that gets sent even if it’s a month or so late ;)

* Enoyed this Ruby Beats Remix on Paw Tracks to a band named Rings. In fact the remix with crunkish beats and swirling electronic synths didn’t interest me as much as the vocals. After a few detective tricks, I realised that Rings is the new name of First Nation, which is the all girl trio from NY with a great debut that gave the anthemic Female Trance to us. Lovely.

[youtube xhE-0IDpkiM]
A Number of Names - Shari Vari 1982 on Detroit local show “The Scene”

* Plunderphonics band Oh Astro has a new album out here’s the opener Snow Queen, which samples Ratatat’s “Desert Eagle” and Lily Allen’s “Everything Is Wonderful”

* Alt-country stuff from UK’s Goodtimes Goodtimes

[youtube BQn6Qb-9mD8]
Taraf de Haïdouks - Latcho Drom

* One of the most influential Balkan orchestras, the Romanian gypsy Taraf de Haïdouks has a new one called Maskarada on Belgium’s Crammed label, after 6 years of silence. This happy folk tune “Lezginkha” with lovely cymbalom, violin and accordeon parts is actually a traditional song from the Caucasus region.

* My new favourite jazz mp3blog called Destination Out. They’ve recently done a huge retrospective called the Best of 90’s Jazz with lists from jazz afficionados. A wealth of knowledge found here if you’re into jazz. Also a testimonial anectode by Vijay Iyer for the late Andrew Hill (who died from lung cancer in April but in May became the first person ever to receive a posthumous honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. ) and a 1 hour good quality streaming live concert from his last concert at Trinity Church. Instant add to blogroll!.

* 3 hours of Drexciya special show on Bleep 43, a terrific podcast. Download and listen to other shows as well. Thanks to Yhancik’s LJ.

* Eclectic Spanish ska-punk-polka clarinet band Polka Madre y La Comezon on either/or. Listen to Funeral del tio Perverso after 1:30 a cover of Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, one of the best songs ever!.

* Needing to be has a track from the recent Fennesz / Sakamoto collaboration, and one from clarinettist Don Byron.

* Cinematic Hiphop compilation from Bricolage Fantasy incl. My Brightest Diamond & Socalled & Macromantics.

* Exclusive high quality live videos from Low, Akron / Family / Tapes’n'Tapes on Schedule Two.

[youtube k6zzI_-CBIc]
Otemoyan performed by The Sakura Ensemble

* I’ve also found a way to incorporate youtube to undomondo without clogging up the RSS feed. That’s by using the tumblr service. Now the button on top (or this one) that appropriately says youtube takes you too a page with nothing but videos. You can add it to your readers or just remember to click once in a while because I update it almost daily now with videos found on youtube.

Latest additions : world renowned classical violinist Itzhak Perlman plays Klezmer , pianist Keith Jarrett on Improvisation, a b&w Nurse With Wound video, Fennesz “Caecilia”, Fred Firth & Camel Zekri improvising, Sunburned hand of the man - Live and a traditional Japanese dance version of Otemoyan which was covered by Andrew & Emiko.

This time he’s on Mahogani Music with his debut CD “Solid (A moment) in the mind of Pirahnahead” which includes the 2004 hit Dreams and more tracks in the vein of his boss Moodymann or the UK house collective The Rurals. Warm rhodes / guitar licks on urban downtempo and house beats and silky vocals. This is truly a no filler urban soundtrack album for your luxury home.

I’m sure some of the die hard electroheads will find some songs on this list to be watered down electro, or electro-pop, but I’m pretty much proud of this post guys, this is probably my most dedicated post ever which I took time to remember tunes that cover most of the different electro schools. I was going to put a few electro classics online inspired by Der Zyklus, but then I pretty much delved into history and I couldn’t leave out any. I’ve probably missed a lot of songs that I don’t know about from some originators and pioneers, so this is surely only my Personal electro history and I’m not even sure I have it complete for me. It would be pretty exciting to hear your opinions on what I’ve caught and missed.

Little Computer People - Little Computer People : One of the kings of the electro genre Mr. Anthony Rother’s great remix of the original Little Computer People song from 1979. I’ve always found computer vocals saddening perhaps because of the whole lonely robot with feelings image in my mind, but this song has one of the saddest vocals that I’ve ever heard.

Drexciya - Lost Vessel : One of the members of the Underground Resistance, the infamous Drexciya had released lots of music and even created a whole Drexciyan subwater world to accompany the music. Sadly James Stinson died in 2002 and Drexciya is no more. Their music has been influential to a whole electro-techno movement in the 1990s with touches of industrial and detroit techno. This is one of their most famous songs which I’m sure most of you have heard it at least once in some place.

Michael Knight (DMX Krew) - Knight Ryder : DMX Krew has kickstarted my electro career when I saw him at a Rephlex Party in Istanbul back in the day. We were all there for AFX while DMX Krew really kicked ass, most of the people didn’t get the humor then, but I was pretty much very happy by this kitsch 80s music than AFX’s IDM/Gabber liveset. Here’s one of the highlights from that night a remix of the theme from David Hasselhoff’s Knight Rider.

A Number of Names - Shari Vari (The Hacker and Vitalic Remix) : Sterling Jones and Paul Lesley’s A Number of Names’s “Shari Vari” was the first techno track to be released out of Detroit in early 1981. This is from the massive hit (once again) from 2002’s Gigolo 88. Lyrics

Bolz Bolz - Take a Walk : This song has never been so famous I suppose, but it was a underground hit in Istanbul in the first few years in 2000’s, I’m sure everyone that used to hang out in Godet back in the day would remember this song released on Feis in 2001. Not really electro but I felt like it fits the list.

Sven Vaeth - Pathfinder : Sven’s last good album was 2000’s Contact. I didn’t really like most of the stuff he put out from then on, but this sure is an incredible album in its own. I skipped the famous hit Dein Schweiss for a personal favourite.

Legowelt & Orgue Electronique - Derrick in Nord Korea : Holland’s Legowelt has always been a favourite among friends in Istanbul. I’ve always felt that he’s more of a computer demo scene music guy and he’s really attracted to chip music. Here’s a song that’s referencing two things from the scene and released by Bunker records in 2000.

i-F - Theme from Murdercapital : I-F’s influence on Europe’s electro scene can’t be neglected. Netherlands’ finest and darkest export i-F from 2001’s I-F versus that Nigger on Murder Capital.

Alexander Robotnick - Love Robot : How could I skip the man with a robot in his name. I first heard of him in a incredible playlist by Felix da Housecat and its nice to listen to this Italian song once again for the sake of this post.

Anthony Rother - Destroy him my Robots : I’ve not been fan of his later stuff but this song has the vocal line Destroy him my Robots, and for the sake of it alone it’s in the list.
