Making covers of well known stuff are almost always a good catch. However getting to do a cover album of the greatest electronic anthems ever straight on is a mammoth task. Simply for the fact that these are really the biggest electronic anthems ever and you don’t have the chance to go wrong. Decide to cover Jaydee’s “Plastic Dreams”, Isolee’s “Beau Mot Plage”, Josh Wink’s “Higher States of Consciousness”, Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europa Express”, Mr. Fingers’ “Can you feel it” and you are officially not allowed to mess up. With courage and over 10 years of musicianship though, Christian Prommer pulls it together on his Sonar Kollektiv debut. Although it’s debatable if Prommer’s version of “Beau Mot Plage” surpasses the original jazzy version by Freeform Five, it’s a lovely gift to listen to Ame’s “Rej”, a much recent anthem that I’m sure most of you have heard at least once in a club. Veteran musician C. Prommer’s been in Fauna Flash, Voom:Voom and Trüby Trio, done remixes and releases on Compost, Mole and G-Stone, the holy trinity of so euro dub & urban lounge music. The idea for this one came out when he did a remix of Derrick May’s classic “Strings of Life” which received rave reviews all over and by the man himself!. You can’t go wrong with this track selection and making jazzy reinterpretations generally but Prommer pulls it off so easily, it’s baffling why he got so few buzz for this one.

Nottingham’s Friendly Fires is an indie/dance band that has officially managed to get my interest. I’ve always avoided these hipster party stuff since nu-rave = nu-metal for me. Alas Friendly Fires seems to have find the perfect formula for the genre with two golden tracks not unlike Bloc Party’s first album of formulaic indie. Provided that I don’t like formulaic music, I don’t use the term pejoratively here, if you’ve got the correct formula, we’re not entitled to say anything!.

Berliner electronic music veteran Thomas Fehlmann of Oceanclub and part time The Orb fame, has released his second album on Kompakt after 2002’s Visions of Blah.

I have to admit that I’m not really a fan of Kompakt and related labels musical route since 2002-2003. The surge of German teenager dance music producers has effectively killed the dancefloor for me, while gaining a huge amount of haters as fans once the notorious Cologne minimal sound was watered down and molded into electro house. With the minimal and dubby aesthetic of Studio 1 replaced by synth techno I abandoned ship, but it’s always a rewarding occasion to listen to Fehlmann’s albums, precisely because he knows the old code about doing minimal dance music.

Honigpumpe has 12 tracks with Fehlmann’s toolbox consisting of dark and warm soundscapes, minimalist dubby pads, driving basslines, mostly 4×4 beats with shuffle beats on a few, not unlike a run-of-the-mill new techno artist. The difference here is in the quality and his intuitive compositional judgement through experience. The fact that he’s been making electronic music since 1979 from the era of Neue Deutsche Welle should be enough to explain his notorierity on this subject. Musical aesthetic is pretty hard to describe in terms, especially for dance music but the thing that strikes me most is how refined and coherent everything is throughout Honigpumpe, just a little bit of more non electronic influences apart from the pseudo-jazzy “Atlas 2” or some “melody” on a few tracks and it would have been the icing on the cake!.

The second compilation from Barcelona’s Lasal label formed after the beach & open-air bar of the same name (since 1993!) showcases a selection from high quality contemporary urban dance music that none of us with a sane mind can resist. A range of styles like urban soul, reggae, deep house, leftfield hiphop, broken beats, electronica are apparent. Of course avid listeners of these styles may notice the fact that this compilation is from 2006 and has some well-known hits like Recloose’s Dust and Isolee’s Cardiology Remix, the real treat here was the opener by Trinityroots and Mark de Clive-Lowe’s Slide, with its great slide bass at the end of the track.

I’ve been quite slow in dealing with PR mails and requests this month because of my finals period (like I’m so quick otherwise!) there’s been some decent submissions and here I’ll try to mention some of my selections. More submission stuff to follow soon, don’t hesitate to send your stuff.

Sir Salvatore, is playful indie with a clean pop style from SF. Kinda like Field Music. They’re a relatively new band but they’ve opened up for Sebadoh’s Eric Gaffney. I liked the riff on this song a lot, because it’s catchy and feel good.

&ND - To make a good believer, you gotta do what you’re told says French electro/indie group &ND. They’re a Parisien band influenced by modern dance/rock bands like LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture, with a little bit emphasis on the guitars. I’m normally not so much into this kind of music, but I liked the lyrics and their radio friendly dancerock so I thought I would let you check it out yourself

Infants have chaotic Hella like beats mixed with the furiousity of Atari Teenage Riot with a messier sound. Extreme/raw sounds and ideas please me aesthetically, but having a muddy chaos is not so appealing for me, got to clean the mud a little bit IMO.

Beta Valentine is from Austin, TX and they’ve just released their second album called Gold on Has anyone ever told you?. This is energetic power trio music with heavy trashy guitars in fact it’s electrified southern rock with a little bit artsyness (is there a word like that?) thrown in, but my question is “why are the vocals mixed so low?”

Finally the most famous of all the bunch, 65daysofstatic the 4 piece electropostrock band from Sheffield, UK. They’ve been getting critical acclaim and reviews everywhere, for some reason I’m not a huge fan of their stuff, but I’ve always thought they are a solid band.

There’s a rising trend in dance music for the last few years, and it’s now safe to say disco is back, at least in europe, and mostly thanks to re-edits. Of course the nu-disco scene in USA has been flowering for years, with the likes of Metro Area, Daniel Wang & Kelley Polar but re-edits of prog/kraut bands like Alan Parsons Project? Amon Düül or old Italo Disco? that’s a different story and behind it are the evil disco boys of D-I-R-T-Y from France, who are going to premiere their Dirty Space Disco compilation on Tigersushi with the legendary Cosmic Disco DJ Daniele Baldelli at the Vilette Sonique Festival.

D-I-R-T-Y guys are not the only ones doing re-edits of course, there’s a whole slew of artists like the king Tangoterje Barna Sound Machine, the Sa-Ra Collective, Sasso, Otterman Empire, Freaky Funk, The Delicate Genius, DJ Harvey, Krikor1 and more, there’s a thread on ILX that calls them bearded disco, but most of the vinyls are either bootleg or too limited so they’re very hard to find. Best places to look for them would be the blogs bumrocks and lovefingers, and the D-I-R-T-Y collective blog Alainfinkielkrautrock, and of course the record shops Fatcity or Piccadilly are always a source for the soulful. I’ve selected 5 tracks, a Pilooski re-edit of Yellow Power from the upcoming D-I-R-T-Y compilation, The Delicate Genius with a funky disco edit, and 3 more disco re-edits for your pleasure, will do more soon, I promise!

I’ve known GreensKeepers for a long time, mainly with their house music efforts, so before I get to check their latest Polo Club release thanks to the Dinamo.FM guys, I thought this was yet another dance album as I was accostumed to. In a strange tale of serendipity, the first song I played was “Bloodclots” where words like “purgatory”, “reprisal” and “raining blood” flicked by. After a short amount of processing time, it dawned on me that these are lyrics from the infamous Slayer song Raining Blood, from the Reign in Blood album, one of the alltime best metal albums ever.

I began to laugh like hell instantly, Araya’s blistering fast vocals and King & Hannemann’s thundering guitars were recouped by funky horns and laidback rhythms. In a state of shock and awe, I listened to other tracks from the album. There was no generic house music at all, most songs have a tongue in cheek / fun loving attitude with simple beats, rock riffs and pop hooks. There’s even Huey Lewis & The News‘ most famous “I Want A New Drug” which goes (I want a new drug/One that wont hurt my head/One that wont make my mouth too dry/Or make my eyes too red) made into a slower electropop piece but my greatest obsession is Love Lobotomy with the rolling bass that’s equally suited for the dance floor.

It seems Chicago’s GreensKeepers has found gold on this Om Records release, I know it’s not as sophisticated as some of the stuff I review here, but in an age where pop culture and music has penetrated so much into our houses, I wanted to give props to GK who at least do it right and make it witty & fun at the same time.

PS: I can’t believe the “Greenskeepers bloodclots slayer” query gives no return, has no one noticed that this is the lyrics to Raining Blood?. Here’s the original song, now you can see the boys have been creative!.

Hey kids, normally I hate to go out to events I learn at the same day, I don’t know why but I feel like I should prepare myself to it. (the downside of it is if I learn about a concert too early then it has a handicap of becoming a burden for me). However today there’s a band in town, that I really can’t miss because of this obsessive behaviour. Forro in the Dark has constantly been gracing our radioshows etc. with their excellent album “Bonfires of Sao Joao” on Nublu, but we hadn’t done a feature of them (shame).

This album’s really the most easy going and cheerful album that we’ve listened to in a few months, completely packed with percussion (including a triangle!), tropical vibes, flute, guitar and it’s seen as the best representation of Forro, the traditional dance & music of northeastern Brazil channeled into a highly accessible easy listening mentality (unlike some of the stale latin jazz). As if this wasn’t enough, the album features guests like Cibo Matto’s Miha Hatori, David Byrne and Bebel Gilberto. This album is pure gold, and I strongly advice you (in fact I would force you right away) to see them live if you’re around in Istanbul, I’ve heard that they’re here to play 3 shows, in Ghetto, Nublu boss and sax player Ilhan Ersahin’s new club and I guarantee you’ll leave with a huge smile on your face. Don’t miss!!!

PS: These guys sure know how to rock, very fun to watch live, however the place was quite empty because it’s thursday and there was some more popular events (e.g Asia Argento djing), I might join them once more tomorrow, hopefully there will be some more people!. Here are some photos I took from yesterday night. Also if you’re around Istanbul, tonight we have the queen of spoken word poetry Ms. Ursula Rucker @ Babylon.

We’re definitely into this senseless electro-pop god-knows-whatever hybrid from Brasil’s Bonde Do Rolê. Their “Solta o Frango EP” on Open Field has carved its name in my head instantly with the first track. (well at least I can still remember it starts with B, and I wonder how the ê is pronounced.) This should be brasil’s answer to cheerleader music, and God knows I love to watch Brasillian cheerleaders dance.

I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about but the music seems more simple & fun than booty bass. The second song “Bondallica” has a drunk metalhead bragging about how pop music and punk sucks and how metal rules on top of THE most known metal riff ever. (I initially thought it was Rammstein’s Du Hast, but I’ve since changed my verdict yet can’t pinpoint it.) Terribly funny mashup. Yet the third song “Caminhão de Gás” is the most fun with the fiddly monosynth melody on very basic drumbeats. Simplicity seems to be the key in Bonde Do Rolê’s music. Having fun, and getting wasted without having to bear the the hipster electro-clash scene should be wonderful!.

Ok, thanks to Brooklyn Vegan, we now know they’ve been on tour with Diplo, and the style of the music is called baile funk. Now you should go watch the band’s live show on Youtube and also this one on Google Video.

Make space for Mr. Vonstroke’s debut CD “Beware of the Bird” on his own Dirtybird Records. I generally expect 2-3 good electronic dance albums per month these days and I was expecting a standard CD with 1-2 good tracks and lots of fillers, but oh how mistaken I was. I am sincerely in love with the album at the first listen. I admit there’s nothing new or revolutionary with this album, and there are some “wacky” tracks. But this guy’s really mastered the formula of dance music. It’s not rocket science, just music for a nice party with dancable beats, and some technoish hooks. While most of the big names are repeating themselves this gentleman has taken the sub bass of booty bass and mixed it with acid and electro in a way that would appeal both to the mainstream and the underground dancefloors.

“Deep Throat” is his first hit with a lovely danceable melody and some chunky drums while “Who’s afraid of Detroit?” is a detroit techno take on with minimal drums and dark pads with again a catchy floating melody. Good debut!

Good debut!
