Ob-la-di Ob-la-da
Trying to start the morning on a happy tip, was searching for different versions of Ob-la-di Ob-la-da because of some funny reason involving our friend Boran, came up with these two. The Beatles version is kind of cool as well y’know, even though Lennon hated this because it’s “Paul’s Granny Shit“.
Paul Baribeau covers Springsteen
This was lying around in my hard drive after an initial skimming period, when a few days ago I went back to see how it fared. It fared pretty good actually. I probably know no more than 3 Springsteen songs so I can’t rate the covers against the originals, yet although for the 60s-70s folk connosieur Paul Baribeau’s music may sound derivative, his energy & sincerity make up for the simplicity.
What’s wrong with groovin’
Words can’t describe Letta Mbulu’s “What’s wrong with groovin“, penned by Hugh Masakela in 1967, and re-issued in 2001 by Jazzman Records. Think I first heard this one thanks to Master Gilles Peterson around that time. Sonar Kollektiv artist Stee Downes covered it in his debut, it’s not possible to top Letta, but I think this comes close.
The Freak of Araby
On his latest output The Freak of Araby, Sun City Girls guitar hero Sir Richard Bishop pays homage to the Middle East.
Ego Twister Movie Ruiners
MU-YAP have made an ass of themselves by filing a lawsuit to censor access to Myspace and Last.fm. These idiots don’t have ANY idea of how things work in the 21st century, but thank God there are smart people who appreciate sharing a hard day’s labour. One of them, the Ego Twister netlabel is back with a movie covers compilation.
The Turk’s Bolero
Amazing piece from Sahib Shihab, a traditional piece from the Black Sea region of Turkey as far as I know. Off Companionship which contains the Francy Boland tune “Om Mani Padme Hum” apart from classics such as “Bohemia after dark” (which I’ll be doing a special post on soon) and “Insensatez”.
Dick Hyman
After Error101’s Alamooga post, here’s another quick moog post featuring the prolific pianist & composer Dick Hyman a legendary figure who has released more than 100 albums under his own name. The Age of Electronicus from 1969 features lots of well known covers from The Beatles’ “Ob-la-di Ob-la-da” to James Brown’s “Give it up or turn it loose”.
Sentetik Oyun Havaları
For all who are fans of cover songs, moog synths and Anatolian-pop combined, here’s Turkish dance music “a-la-mooga” for you.
