Corey Wilkes & Abstrakt Pulse
Belonging to a new generation of jazz artists that are slowly taking over the contemporary jazz world 30 year old trumpeter Corey Wilkes has successfully finished his up and coming stage which included graduating from Berklee, playing with the likes of Roscoe Mitchell, Wynton Marsalis, Steve Coleman and replacing the late Lester Bowie on the ranks of the immortal Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Them, Roaring Twenties
Chicago’s Them, Roaring Twenties take this year’s “wacky math/prog rock band who amazed us with their debut” award. Perhaps, silly lyrics, 90’s mathrock and 8bit electronics don’t get on your nerves like the average guy, which is a prerequisite for enjoying Future Sandwich.
Icy Demons
Icy Demons from Chicago has their 3rd album out on the Japanese Easel label. Man Man’s Christopher Powell & Bablicon’s Griffin Rodriguez seem to be the main men of this band, assisted by other Chicago musicians with such silly names as Ali Hawkbar and Ta-Freek-Ya!.
GreensKeepers
I’ve known GreensKeepers for a long time, mainly with their house music efforts, so before I get to check their latest Polo Club release thanks to the Dinamo.FM guys, I thought this was yet another dance album as I was accostumed to.
