The 19th Akbank Jazz Festival is commencing tonight. Tomorrow’s big deal is Terje Rypdal at Aya Irini, but we’ll be skipping it to check out the NYC Brass band Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

These two amazing Brasileira off their 1981 album Caminhos Cruzados – where they sing songs from Edu & Fernando Lobo, Antonio & Paulo Jobim, Dorival & Danilo Caymmi – should serve as a teaser for our upcoming radio show #79.

We aren’t as lucky as Meme Magazine, who got five new Ubiquity releases in their mailbox, yet we’re still content to provide the opening track of the new Nomo album Invisible Cities, provided that I’m a huge fan of Nomo and their brand of Post-Fela afrobeat. With three HQ live videos..

One of the most frequented bands here on undomondo is Portland rockers Grails. Somehow they manage to more than one release each year and we feel like you wanna hear all about them, because they deserve it.

Let’s start this day with a lovely nugget by Ninja Tune released last year by the obscure USA band The Dragons. Properly released after 37 years of initial conception, “BFI” is a psychedelic surf band from the 60’s with more soul than surf guitar. Composed of 3 Malibu, LA surfer brothers this little gem couldn’t surface during their own time.

Like half of the net I was also sad to discover Mclusky after they disbanded in 2005 with Mcluskyism. Now it’s time to rejoice all ye as the “Future of the Left” has arrived! A brilliant name for an absolutely kick ass band!

Any search through music blogs or on Youtube these days will show you that The Budos Band have been getting some attention this summer, much much more than is customary for an afrobeat band. They are an 11-strong horn-heavy, all-male, instrumental band from Staten Island, the New York suburb, and were initially, or so the official lore goes, formed through an after-school jazz community program and called “The Barbudos” until one of them got a shave and they had to do some urgent renaming.
