On Khan’s death in 1997, South Asia women wailed and men wept as if a god had removed himself from the earth. While checking Julie’s tracklist from the previous Free Kitten post, I noticed “When the Levee Breaks” by Led Zeppelin. While no one can say Zeppelin’s cover isn’t top notch, I think I might have found a better version.

I’ve downloaded 2 hard to rare albums of the 57 year old Indian saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath from Meshes of the Afternoon. Born in the Karnataka region in southern India, it took Gopalnath 20 years to master the Saxophone. I’ve personally never heard saxophone in Indian music, no wonder he’s the first musician to incorporate the saxophone in Indian music literature.

Here’s an outstanding album that’s blown me from track no1. The mysterious French-Vietnamese producer Onra has produced an album in the vein of J Dilla, Madlib the Beat Konducta’s Indian album and Galapagos 4’s Deejay OM. Chinoiseries is an instrumental hip hop album with 32 short tracks constructed from samples taken out of old and rare Vietnamese records.

I mentioned O.M.F.O. on Yesterday’s Balkan Beat Box post and I thought I should post a few tracks off his new album “We are the Shepherds“. I’ve rambled about Our Man from Odessa lots of times, his mixture of traditional asian and Turkmenic sounds with modern sounds in a kitsch way has even attracted the attention of Borat.

Lasairfhiona aka Raicin Alainn is a contemporary celtic songwriter, this song is a traditional celtic song “Sí Do Mhamó Í” meaning “She’s your granny”, I don’t know how the traditional one sounds, so I can’t compare it, but her voice is so beautiful and expressive, even my mom was impressed.

And today’s last post is once again influenced by African music. Channel U is Yusuke Yamamoto. You’re surely right to expect eclectic music from a man of Japanese origin, making his own mixture of dub, electronica and jazz, and it is so!.
