Pitchfork and others report that the enigmatic guitarist Jack Rose has passed away after a heart attack aged 38.

This was lying around in my hard drive after an initial skimming period, when a few days ago I went back to see how it fared. It fared pretty good actually. I probably know no more than 3 Springsteen songs so I can’t rate the covers against the originals, yet although for the 60s-70s folk connosieur Paul Baribeau’s music may sound derivative, his energy & sincerity make up for the simplicity.

After two CDRs on their own Root Strata label last year Jefre Cantu-Ledesma’s The Alps with ARP and Scott Hewicker became our favourite drone/soundscape artists. That doesn’t help explain why I missed their Type Records debut III, on the contrary it makes it more mysterious, doesn’t it?.

The Young 12 string guitar master James Blackshaw takes on piano in another enchanting album of five songs spanning 50 minutes. The piano pieces are cool, yet we still prefer him fingerpicking his guitar.

Back home after a short trip, here’s the folky selection we promised but couldn’t deliver on Friday. New stuff from Akron/Family’s Set ‘em Wild, Set ‘em Free, Boduf Songs new EP on Under the Spire, Fire on Fire’s The Orchard (Young God) and DM Stith introduced to us by Simone of Discoballbreaker.
