Mulatu : NY – Addis – London
I’ve overlooked this Mulatu Astatke retrospective from Strut last year, mainly because I think I’ve heard most of his back catalogue and there was nothing that could surprise me. A deeper look unearthed two gems though, featuring two late Ethiophian giants, Menelik Wossenachew on one and Tilahun Gessesse on the other.
Berry Weight
This week’s surpriser flew into our inbox from the duo Berry Weight. Music for Imaginary Movies is their debut on their own label Hypnophonic Records, and it’s apt in describing the music involved.
Waaga Records
Lo-fi kingpins Lefse Records have a new and equally amazing outlet called Waaga Records. In the spirit of 2010’s Waaga offers us a 15 song free download compilation, that starts with an amazing lazy psychedelic jam MING MING DANCE COMPANY and ends with glitcy IDM scapes by Seams. Impressive.
Jonny Trunk : Scrapbook
Jonny Trunk is the man behind Trunk Records, home to the amazing Moon Wiring Club and in the general direction of the Ghost Box clique. He has also been the broadcaster of Resonance.fm’s OST for the past 6 years, which is a heaven for all diggers of soundtracks and library music.
Keiji Haino & Yoshida Tatsuya
Here’s an alternative start to the week, a smorgasbord, no a storm of wild styles by two master musicians, the prolific guitarist Keiji Haino and Ruins drummer Yoshida Tatsuya. Released on Tzadik “Uhrfasudhasdd” is the follow up to New Rap and it’s only for experienced noise/improv heads.
Kuupuu Live in Istanbul tonight
Stupid scientists still haven’t invited the teleporter, and thanks to that I will be missing Jonna Karanka aka the Finnish forest psychfolk/experimentation amazer Kuupuu tonight. Still, spent most of the day listening to her new LP on Time-Lag Records which, if my memory serves me right, is more coherent and refined than her previous efforts.
The Archivist
Moteer boss and The Boats/The Sea & The Remote Viewer main man, Craig Tattersall’s new alter ego The Archivist gathers his unreleased stuff for UK’s Lacie’s Records. Essential no filler disc if you are into early Jan Jelinek, Napoli is not Nepal, Porn Sword Tobacco, Origamibiro, Xploding Plastix and of course Tattersall himself.
Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba
Kouyate brings modern influences as well as Western inspiration to “I Speak Fula”, the debut release of Next Ambiance, an imprint of Sub Pop! Guest appearances by Toumani Diabaté and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and vocals by Amy Sacko.
