Om – God is Good
.. Yet bearing the droning tamboura of Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe aka Lichens enough that holy day, the opener Thebes became a most rewarding song, turning day into night in Egypt where dervishes summon higher spirits…
A Priori
Van Wissem’s influences span the centuries, from Dowland to Deleuze, Tennyson to Sacher-Masoch. He also waxes lyrical about Lacan’s mirror stage theory. “Lacan describes the formation of the ego as a process of identification with one’s own specular image; the mirror leads to tension between the subject and the image. I wanted to find a musical parallel to that. Hence palindromes.”
Breakestra
Been sittin’ on this one for so long, too long actually. Los Angeles’ soul orchestra Breakestra is soon to release their 2nd full length From Dusk Till Dawn on our favourite groove provider Strut.
New Hausckha CDR
Member of a new generation of romantic pianists Hauschka, alongside Sylvain Chaveau, Goldmund (aka Helios), and Max Richter have been quite prominent, putting emotion and quiet introspection in the center of compositions..
Nite Jewel
I’ve been playing the new 12” from Italians do it better a lot in the last days, shame I forgot to blog about it. An amazing cosmic balearic slow disco by Nite Jewel. This must be the disco reply to hazy lo-fi surf stuff that’s become a huge trend this year.
Gnossiennes
September came with gray skies and floods. I was listening to Akira Rabelais‘ 2001 release Eisoptrophobia, specifically his reworkings of Satie’s Gnossiennes when it got really dark and the rain started falling down. A dark but blissful moment.
Ozo
No matter how hard you dig the 70’s continue to remain a gold mine. I got informed about the 70’s soul folk reggae hybrid ensemble Ozo, thanks to a 12” reissue of Anambra, their one off disco smash.
Clutchy meets Kenjamin
Our favourite mythical figure Clutchy Hopkins is back with a new tape on Ubiquity, this time composed of his trip to Barbados in the late 1970s to search for the medicine man Lord Kenjamin. I wouldn’t dare believe Lord Kenjamin is a man, hell if I were you I would even start doubting there is some place called Barbados. It might all be a figment of Clutchy Hopkins’ imagination.
