At undomondo we love small indie publishing houses powered by love. Silber Records with their “Drone love honesty sound” motto is one of them. Focusing on leftfield indie genres like slowcore, shoegaze and their bigger brother post-rock, they’ve become a go to label for everything that includes wall of sound in their 13 year history.
Two new releases by hitherto unknown (to us) acts, Vlor and Aarktica are now out on Silber. Although Vlor has been around since 1992 in various forms, Six-Winged is their second full length. A versatile band of musicians, dubbed the Silber all-stars, Vlor goes through several sonic territories like ambient, drone, slowcore to garage rock with ease. Impressive.
In Sea is Jon DeRosa’s sixth-full length release as Aarktica. Although I haven’t been familiar with his previous output, it’s easy to hear the maturity of his sound after only a few tunes. Recommended if you like: Labradford, Windy & Carl, Ennio Morricone, Eluvium, Mogwai, Seefeel, Earth, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Spacemen 3, and in need of dreamy and suicidal music. Review on Music & Miscellany.
While In Sea’s title is a nod to Terry Riley’s landmark minimal composition “In C,” DeRosa also pays tribute to his teachers La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela (“LYMZ”), with whom DeRosa studied composition & Indian classical vocal music during the difficult years following his sudden deafness. He credits Young & Zazeela with teaching him how to hear without ears, relying on the physical vibrations of his instrument & his vocal chords. This ability allows him to create more detailed & nuanced guitar structures than most could make even with full use of their ears.
What’s more, Silber is one of the most generous labels, with around 25 full albums for free download which include a bunch of label samplers and full albums. Such as this Vlor CDR from 98, or compilations like Songs for America or Silber sounds of Christmas. A label that deserves a lot of support, love and respect.
