The electronic soundscape / noise / ambient / drone scene is burgeouning with great releases these days whether they be CDs or CDRs and casettes on small labels. Artists are fusing different styles and influences into textural forms and despite being highly autonomous and seperate from each other most have a similar aesthetic. I guess it’s part of the zeitgeist after all. Just found another connection today some bands have a connection to sea. Prepare to get terrorised.
+ Teeth of the Sea’s “Orphaned by the Ocean” is one of 2009’s best kept secrets: sludgy stoner rock (can barely be called rock btw) on top of ominous drones and sinister noises. For fans of Grails, Earth, general Sludge, sinister bass and disaster movies.
+ Nest is off Mountains’ (Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp) Mountainsx3 EP. Different than the other pieces we’ve selected, it’s more of an acoustic piece slowly building into a grainy barrage of sound.
+ Back to this Place is off a split with I am Seamonster and Expo 70 on Small Doses one of the best CDR labels around. Another sea themed thriller reminiscent of Teeth of the Sea but without any organic element and heavy noise and drones. Get from The Omega Order.
+ Meczûp is a Turkish word (from Arabic) that means an insane person obsessed with divine love and grace. The artist is Cihan Gulbudak from Istanbul and the whole album is done by nail clipping sounds which were fed into amps, feedback machines and noise generators. Once again different from some of the more drony soundscapes in this selection. Free download from last.fm.
+ The closer is off last year’s Kiri No Oto by Lawrence English. Contrasting his other CDR Studies for Stradbroke, this is more of a fuzz sea of drone, and it’s easy to lose an organ at it. Getting a new release on Taylor Deupree’s 12K soon.
Mountains – Nest
I am Seamonster – Back to this Place
Meczûp – Ongles Coupés
Lawrence English – Organs Lost at Sea
