In the mailbox Jan 2009

Finally we dug deep in our mailbox to reveal the cream of the crop we got sent in the last month.

Electronic

Xylos – In the Bedroom
Brooklyn five piece Xylos fuses tropical sounds with happy-go-lucky indie pop songwriting. You can download their debut 5 song EP on their band site. More Xylos on Deli Magazine.

Diego Bernal – Bring it on home
Exponential artist Diego Bernal is a San Antonio, TX based civil rights attorney who happens to be a beat maker on the side.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Old Panda Days
Don’t ask me wtf “Old Panda Days” mean. Off Casiotone’s upcoming album on Tomlab, this March.

Downbeat, Nujazz

Una Mas Trio – Son Montuno (Smoove Remix)

Una Mas Trio’s first 12″ on Agogo Records with the single Clear as Water feat. vocals by Bajka and remixes by Mo’ Horizons and Hidden Jazz Quartett. 4 quality tracks on this one. Recommended.

The Jazzinvaders – Day by Day

The Socialized Jazz Beats series, compiled by Phil Martin, has number two out. Featuring tracks from The Jazzinvaders, Solo Moderna, Jaffa, Frank Montis, Diesler and The Houdini’s, this compilation has a signature sound of nu-jazz, deep house and jazzy house. We’ve covered the first one here.

Laura Vane & The Vipertones – Steam

Brighton based vocalist Laura Vane and her band The Vipertones are a new breed of funk & soul group that exist on the internet with Phil Martin & Ton Van Der Kolk from Holland playing the instruments on top of beats by Jonathan Radford aka Diesler from Manchester which in turn gets sung over by Laura. Contrary to all the distance it comes together brilliantly, their first debut out soon.

Indie

Mascot Fight – Play the Meathead Anthem
4-piece indie band from the UK, whose debut album got released today.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Island
The Whitest Boy Alive return for 2009 with their follow up album Rules released on their own label, Bubbles, out March 30th.

Other

The Bran Flakes – Stumble out of bed

Mamou Sidibé – Mali Mousso
Frenetic dance jam by Mamou Sidibé from the upcoming Chaleh compilation by Akwaaba Music. Ghanaian hiplife and Ivorian coupé décalé, a nice remedy to the common cold.

Mistress Stephanie & Her Melodic Cat – Little Death
Golden Arm Trio members’ Stephanie Stephens and Adam Sultan’s cabaret act which crosses border into punk rock and synth pop.
