Hat tip to Cenk Akyol, who introduced us to Jacaszek with his Classic & Modern Mix and a note saying his 2008 album Treny is among the best this year. Polish artist Michael Jacaszek makes cinematic electroacoustic music. It is sad and totally b&w as if watching a post-WWII movie set among the ruins of war. Yet beautiful string arrangements from violinist Stefan Wesolowski and cellist Ania Smiszek-Wesolowska alongside Maja Sieminska’s choral work add an ethereal mystical beauty to the gloomy clickbeats. I don’t think such a feat has been achieved since Murcof’s debut album Martes. Released by Norway’s Miasmah, a netlabel gone proper label which we have always been fond of, it’s such a masterful album that it succeeds to avoid falling into the cliche soundtrack genre while retaining its immense cinematic quality. Put this on your player and read some philosophy a lovely afternoon pastime.
