The Mabuses

Any of you remember Doctor Mabuse? The notorious criminal made famous by Fritz Lang is the inspiration of the band’s name. Similar to its elusive namesake, The Mabuses has been an overlooked gem and never made big. While Kim Fahy and Co’s career spans almost two decades with various projects, they’ve been very selective and released only two albums, both critically acclaimed.

Now, I don’t know where I’ve been the past few months but I’ve only recently got their third “Mabused” and I’m impressed with what I hear. With their third album, the Londoners are back to form with their versatile psychedelic pop, and surreal British humour, which we like very much both in cinema and music. Reminds me of Madness with less ska influence among other Britpop sensations like XTC and The Beatles. Extensively refined pop music with the added bonus of a chamber orchestra churning endless musical references and influences at a time on every song, the culmination of 20 years of experience.
