After the break with Island, Scratch moved to Amsterdam where a short-lived label, Black Art, was set up. In 1982 he fronted some U.S. dates with an American reggae band called the Terrorists. Residents living near one show’s promoter called the police at 6 AM to report a half-naked man with a machete jogging through the neighborhood. It was Scratch. Said Lee about the band, “They are the Terrorists and I am Dr. Sea bat here to bless the good and to curse the evil.” Lee Scratch Perry

Brethren of the Free Spirit // Jeffrey Roden

Tags: , , , ,

Hi kids I assume some of you might be bored of all this dancable hummable summer music so to add some spice for the more sophisticated reader, here’s some tunes that have been guiding me to sleep in the last months.

The first piece is by Brethren of the Free Spirit duo consisting of 12 string acoustic guitar virtuoso James Blackshaw and lutenist Jozef Van Wissem. As the name suggests “All Things are from Him, through Him and in Him” has high doses of spirituality in it. Very repetitive and minimalistic, it might take some time to get into it if you’re not into minimalism in the classical sense. The piece takes a new dimension when Blackshaw’s 12 string joins around 1:20 mark. The second piece I chose is by Van Wissem from his 2007 album Stations of the Cross, I guess Van Wissem is responsible for all the religious references.

The last piece is by Jeffrey Roden from his 2007 album Seeds Of Happiness on New Albion, which is soon to become an all time favourite. Roden works solo on his bass guitar subtly mic-ed into delivering incredible harmonies and barren b&w soundscapes. It’s amazing how he can conjure these mental images with only a bass and no fx and all in one take!

All three should be listened with headphones and probably in a peaceful setting before sleep.

    Señor Coconut “Around the World”

    Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Blog favourite German from Chile, Señor Coconut aka Uwe Schmidt and his orchestra has the latest installment to their series of latin pop covers.

I know the excitement fades after 3 albums and BBC even wonders if it’s time for Coconut to retire, the idea is barely new but it’s terribly infectious and successful plus you can’t be critical when it’s summer and it’s over 30C when all you wanna do is to hear some good spirited tunes and singalong.

We see the orchestra in top shape once again as Coconut veteran Argenis Brito sings on most of the tunes while Louie Austen sings on two. We even see a duet on Prince’s Kiss. Tunes like Telex’ Moscow Discow, Les Baxter’s Voodoo Dreams which kickstarted the series as well. There was a comment about Baxter not getting enough reference so it’s a welcoming occassion. Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams, and the 80s German hit “Da Da Da” gets covered (with Stephan Remmler on the vocals)

What I picked for you is Replicant Rumba Rockers‘ “La Vida es Llena de Cables” (which I assume is Schmidt and fellow musician Bernd Friedman which also make up Flanger) and the merenguified version of “White Horse”. Not as good as the “Yellow Fever” album but that’s simply because songs like “Yellow Magic” and “Rydeen” can’t be matched.

    Diesler // Melvyn Price

    Tags: , , , , ,

Last week got two emails, one from our friend Jonathan Radford aka Diesler, about a new remix he’s done. It’s a driving deep house remix to Unforscene’s vocal piece called “Dangerous“. Catchy tune, very radio friendly and moving not like his regular latin tinged nujazz stuff. On Tru Thoughts. His live band members, have a 7 piece funk band called 6ix Toys and they’re now signed to First Word, watched them live and the lads sure know how to rock a party!

The second email was from Waxpoetics, informing us about a lovely remaster project they’re releasing on July : Melvyn Price’s 1974 album “Rhythm and Blues”. Percussive and soulful jazz just the way it’s supposed to be! Give us more of this anyday!

In the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Price set sail for Sweden where he immediately began gigging with Scandinavia’s jet-set jazz musicians. Although Price had cut his teeth in Motown, the folk explosion of the mid-’60s and Afro-Cuban music’s increasing visibility were both making major impacts on Price’s musical leanings. In 1974, after a pair of primarily percussive albums intended to aid dance instruction, Price composed and recorded his masterpiece, Rhythm and Blues, released on his own Meldor label. The music was simple, yet inspiring, pairing Sweden’s disciplined session players with imported Latin-American percussionists. Rhythm and Blues was never widely distributed abroad, and has, in recent years, fetched top dollar at auction.
