Summer Soul : James Pants / Muhsinah & Others

We’re having some technical problems with the site that’s why we’re experiencing some short downtimes. Anyways before I jet out here’s the last post to end the summer soul series. Here are some more names to check out on the soulful side. First track is off UK leftfield R&B soul artist Muhsinah’s debut “Day Break 2.0″, mysterious Californian composer Clutchy Hopkins who has previously worked with another secretive artist MF Doom. Next up is James Pants on Stones Throw, with some dirty electro beats. Two artists that BBE has kindly supplied promos of are UK sensation Aaron Jerome who’s remixed DJ Vadim and Mood Therapy with “Time to Rearrange”. I’m covering this up a tad late, yet it’s a wonderful album especially this track with Bajka. The second one is off Kon and Amir’s mix Off Track compilation, mixing world music with funky stuff / disco and what not, features very rare gems, that frankly I haven’t heard of before. And last but not least is another track send to us by the kind folks from Exponential, a Rae Davis remix of Flying Lotus himself.
It’s a quick post, because I”m running out of time, but I’m gonna add more infos and links when I have the time. Till then just enjoy!
Muhsinah - Discovery
Clutchy Hopkins - Percy on the One
James Pants - We’re through
Aaron Jerome - Way of Life feat. Bajka
Phillip and Lloyd - Keep on Moving
Flying Lotus - Tea Leaf Dancers (Rae Davis Remix)

Kissey Asplund

Hittin you up with another sweet soul sensation, this time from Sweden. Kissey Asplund’s debut on UK’s R2 Records is as sweet and deep as vocals go. With jazzy & ultra laidback beats provided by Paris hip-hoppers Papa Jazz Crew, this is a collaborative zeitgeist for Europe Soul in 2008. Her new album “Plethora” is being played by Master Gilles and Yoruba magician Osunlade among others. Almost all styles on the soulfulside of things is represented from jazz to grove, from soul to brokenbeat and there’s even vocal experimentations like AGF does on AGF/Delay tracks. Big up!

One highlight is Mor Thiam’s `Ayo Ayo Nene` which was recently included in a compilation called Spiritual Jazz, but thanks to a comment by our avid reader Henri, a rip of the original vinyl release can be found on El Reza.

Summer Soul P2 : Flying Lotus

Continuing our soulful hiphop tour, renowned beatdigger Steve Ellison aka Flying Lotus is soon to have his sophomore album “Los Angeles” out on UK’s Warp. His debut “1983″ on Carlos Nino’s (Ammoncontact / Build an Ark) Plug Research was very well received and so was his “Reset EP” on Warp, which is pure gold!. His music has the mellow chords & laidback soul that you’d expect from LA Scene characterized by Plug Research, but he doesn’t refrain himself from using more electronic sounds which might appeal more to fans of Warp. Dark cosmic soundscapes accompany clappy beats giving his music an eerie and dystopic cinematic quality.
He’s a grand nephew of the late Alice Coltrane and it seems family tradition has once again produced a notable musician in touch with cosmos. He’s been doing bootleg remixes to Kelis and Oizo as well and he is carrying the torch ignited by J Dilla, Madlib and co. to different heights.

Summer Soul Intro P1: Eric Lau

This week we’ll be covering all the neosoul/jazzy hiphop stuff coming out mostly from the UK and of course the US (Stones Throw!) It’s def going to be the sound of this summer and might we say flutes are making a comeback!.
Let’s start with a fabulous album on Ubiquity by 26 years old Eric Lau from London. Apparently an Hong Kong native who’ve come to London to study, Lau climbed the ladders pretty fast and has produced for well known Stones Throw artists like Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Guilty Simpson and Lupe Fiasco so I’m sure you know which “territory” we’re talking about.
Soulful vocals, deep jazzy chords, blunted guitar solos and gentle headbopping movement abound in this one combined with the vocal talent of up and coming UK Vocalists like Rahel and Tawiah makes this debut for the humble Chinese producer a well received hit.

I remember when you signed me up for a summer art program where I learned how to paint, and do arts and crafts doodling crap. It’s funny how things work out. Almost a decade later, you paid for me to go to an auto-acceptance Art Institute in Chicago/San Fransisco/New York City/Los Angeles. I went for a year, and you paid the $30,000 tuition, and you paid for my rent. You also bought me a Macbook because I wanted the little camera thingy, even though you bought me an iBook 3 months earlier.
* Interview with Mor Thiam, percussionist & drummer father of rapper Akon, about Africa, America & percussion music in the 60s. Another interview with Seun Kuti son of Fela Kuti by Get up and Think!.
