Future of the Left

Like half of the net I was also sad to discover Mclusky after they disbanded in 2005 with Mcluskyism. Now it’s time to rejoice all ye as the “Future of the Left” has arrived! A brilliant name for an absolutely kick ass band!
Founded from the remnants of Mclusky and Jarcrew as a Walesian (is there a word like this ? ) super group with singer/guitarist Andy “Falco” Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestoneof Mclusky, alongside singer/bassist Kelson Mathias of Jarcrew, they’ve been working to produce their debut, after a few strictly limited 12″s, which was at last released last week on Too Pure. And what a debut it is!
Just like previous Mclusky stuff “Curses” has short songs, distorted riffs & sardonic lyrics and some fantastic singalong choruses. Contrastingly, there’s some synth work on a few of the songs, perhaps making it a little bit market friendly and enjoyable for some and a little bit cheesy for others, also there’s some subtle prog elements in the arrangements perhaps thanks to Kelson, songs are less straightforward than Mclusky.
BBC reviews say “Future Of The Left seem to have arrived at a very hi-fi brand of lo-fi” which is spot on. Soundwise, it’s crunchy, distorted and noisy yet shining and crisp as well. But the real power lies in the songs, because songwise this is real outsider rock. A virus that may penetrate into the mainstream because of the sound, yet not directed any ways toward the mainstream at all. No two songs alike, the diversity on “Curses” puts all the mainstream mallpunk bands who shit hundreds of the same song with different lyrics to shame. 37 minutes and 14 songs of pure leftfield piss-rock, one of the best releases of 2007.
ED : Boxstr is back up. enjoy!
