I first heard a Doctor L (Liam Farrell) track on the amazing French compilation series Source Lab. I had a thought to see what this artist was doing after all these years. Seems he’s been quite busy and has built a name up for himself as a producer and music maker in France. His father is Irish and his mother is English. He moved to France when he was just little. He played in bands and helped produced French hip hop in the early 90’s. The album I picked up was Forgotten Tracks From Da Hard Drive. It was released in ‘06. Most collections like these tend to be on the lame side but this one is pretty solid throughout. Doctor L plays a mix of glitch hop, rare grooves, jazz, R&B, and afrobeats. It’s pretty trippy music but it’s got a very laid back groove to it that’s designed to make you relaxed with all the chaos. Very inventive album. I have a feeling I’ll be picking up more Doctor L.
