Max Roach Tribute
With great sadness and awe I read about the demise of Max Roach while on vacation a few days ago on a national newspaper. It felt a bit awkward to read about his death on a mainstream newspaper, which never ever ever says a thing about jazz or writes obituaries of important international artists, just bullshit magazine stuff. You know you’ve been an important artist when the news of your death is even featured on a mainstream tabloid in Turkey. Now that means something!. Also a proper tribute is written today on a better newspaper today, so if you can read Turkish, do so.
Much has been said this last few days so I won’t try to add anything apart from saying that he was one of the most important US jazz drummers who was there from bebop to freejazz playing with all the notable jazz players such as Clifford Brown, Sonny Rolins, Anthony Braxton and countless more.
So music to the rescue!. One of the tracks has been featured here before, but it’s a suitable bye bye to him so once again it’s here. Make sure you check out the Max Roach tribute playlist on Motel de Moka, read his obituary and also tributes from jazz-heads all over the world. R.I.P
