Artanker Convoy

Groovy Brooklyn collective Artanker Convoy has a new one out on The Social Registry also home to Gang Gang Dance, Samara Lubelski and Blood on the Wall, and the 6 tracker named “Cozy Endings” has easily piqued my interest enough to take the spot for the beginning of the week.

Artanker Convoy sounds like a 70’s porngroove jam band opening up to experiment with feedback & resonators after they’ve been given their first acid at the party. The music is led by the relentless bass groove, garnished by soulful organs on top of world rhythms and a pinch of psychedelia to create a unique take, (that could be called post-groove or post-soul) that’s sophisticated and dancable at the same time. (Take it modern dance music makers!)

There are all kinds of references to African and Brasil rhythms, funk and krautrock, there’s slide guitars even tablas and saxophone on some tracks but there are no cliches to be heard as the Convoy has made their own blend which resembles none of the parts. Truly truly remarkable stuff, the only downside? There’s only 6 tracks and 40 minutes on this one. Luckily the DVD version has 9 extra videos with the art/video/performance collective MUX.

They often perform live with free-form modern dancers, a far cry from your average NYC combo, who generally prefer rooms full of folks standing stock-still with crossed arms. “Other Music

psych-inflected work of a Bitches Brew-influenced contemporary jazz quintet, or perhaps a Krautier and more angular experimental funk outfit à la Medeski, Martin & Wood. “Tiny Mix Tapes

Sounds interesting, but the server is down. Any chance of reposting? Thank you!
  • Yeah I tried to explain how everything is melded into one but you've put it better than me :)

Wow! That sure is syncretic. Sounds as if somebody had found a way to zip most of my music files into one! Great stuff. Thanks a lot.
