Cylob – Live at Bangface – December 2006

I’m really happy that we’re getting acclaim from not only other mp3blogs but labels and artists as well. Just a week or so ago a mail from Accidental Records home to one of our most respected artists Matthew Herbert came asking us if we wanted promos and the same week veteran Rephlex artist Cylob contacted us in person over his new label!. The traditional media & labels are more and more getting interested in blogs and other online promotion methods, Accidental has already uploaded their back catalogue on last.fm’s labels facility. Here’s accidental, soundslike and lifelike, you can listen to full tracks on nearly all albums from their back catalogue.

So today’s first track is from “Setsubun Bean Unit” (great name!) is a band by members of the Farmyard Animals inspired by the traditional Setsubun (seasonal division) Festival in Japan. This song is a perfect mixture of dub & jazz & noisy electronica and traditional Japan melodies, which instantly sent me salivating over the album. If you are into Burnt Friedman’s electronic dub albums on Nonplace or the Root 70 album you’ll fall in love with this one. You can listen to more tracks on Setsubun Bean Unit’s last.fm page.

Our second track is highly contrasting with the above song in terms of accessible melodies. “Rock the Trojan Fader” is a chaotic one with chromatic melodies, vocoded vocals and crazy beats, trademarks of the legendary Cylob who is one of the forefathers of IDM with Aphex Twin & The Rest of the Rephlex gang. It’s not as radio friendly as his previous singles “Rewind” or “Cut the Midrange, Drop the Bass” but for a guy who’s recorded a gamelan/bell album, I guess being radio friendly means hot air. His new label Cylob Industries will be releasing MP3s on Bleep and Rough Trade Digital.
