Own records

Alright drumroll!

This is the first time we got sent a promo CD ever (yeah those shiny silver things). I mostly tell up-and-coming labels not to waste their precious economic sources and send us cds, because we’re situated in Istanbul and that’s a planet away from most of the music industry, but Own Records from Luxembourg (whom we mentioned here before), home to acts like Bexar Bexar, Uzi & Ari and Gregor Samsa humbled us with an elegantly designed double CD of a new project by Portland based Aaron Gerber.

Gerber, member of the Portland indie collective A Weather, embarked on an audio & visual project (hence the second DVD) called Six Twilights with bandmate Zoe Wright and Liz Isenberg. Delicate digital melancholy composed of voices & acoustic guitars cut up and shuffled into patterns of sounds, like AGF doing poetry over snowy soundscapes by Fennesz. Glitches and drones accompany vocals forming emotionally powerful personal universes in every title. Each piece seems to be a detailed look on a small fragment of time in life rather than a musical narrative, very static, resembling more a technique related to photography or sculpture (also illustrated in the video). That said, paradoxically the standout tracks for me are “Tonight I’m letting you drive” and “Still Talk” perhaps because of their rather traditional song structure. A beautiful highly illustrative album that fits perfectly to snowy landscapes and heartbroken afternoons.
