Beirut : Watching your city get bombed, how earth shattering.
Here’s #16 of our radioshows played by me last week. Starts off slow with a soundscape by SF artist Jefre-Cantu Ledesma, which has an Afghani love song sung on top. I don’t know why I felt so multicultural last week but I did, a little bit of humorous Anti-Bush & Anti-War Middle Eastern stuff from Filastine which has recently released a mixtape split with DJ /Rupture on the Shotgun Wedding Series and Porest develops into an oh so funny piece by Sun-Ra called “Nuclear War“, It’s a Motherfuxxer, yeaa!
A highly experimental mix goes into Burial and then to Masada, ok when error101 listened to this she rolled her eyes, I don’t know, I felt like playing Bith Aneth afterwards, the transition is not bad, but it’s not over the top, and also having Jewish & Arabic songs in the same radioshow is a great way to protest all the warmongers, mind ya I didn’t play it because of that, but because Bith Aneth is one of my alltime favourite songs, in fact for me it’s one of John Zorn’s masterpieces, so perfect.
Another masterpiece comes from Belgian Aksak Maboul’s opener of their first album from 1977 and it’s a strange symphonic neopolitan song, I’ve listened to the second part of this song over and over a lot, it’s very dark & oriental, and unbelievably good. The next song by Master drummer Okay Temiz (unarguably one of the most important Turkish musicians ever in the international scene, but has never gotten enough attention from Turkish press) and Sylvian Kassap, famed clarinettist who’s played with the Gods of continental jazz like Texier & Romano, Steve Lacy, is a wordplay and a cover of a traditional turkish song, taken to great heights with Kassap’s flurrying solos and ends the first part of the show.
The second part opens up with a Max Roach classic from 1956, then a song from De-Phazz’ latest album which I reviewed a few days ago, the next track is by Sublime, the White California Dub-Punk trio, I’ve listened to this album fervently back in my youth and it’s definitely a classic for me from top to bottom, however the guys on ILX criticized them harshly for being white & skaters who in a way stole black man’s music and created a huge following of MTV kids, but I digress, the next song is by A&E which I reviewed here, then there’s a funny Axel F cover from Sorry no Ferrari, which has a quality EP out on , it’s cut short because the last shows on air where cut with advertisements, and I thought I’d be prepared for that, but this time to my luck there wasn’t any spots! It’s a shame, but I hope to be reviewing them soon, because it’s such a cool little EP. The last part is a bit more rocking, with stuff by Switzerland’s Manufactur (with a short acapella of Selda a Turkish protest musician from 60s-70s which got a reissue last year from Finders Keepers), and the next two tracks by artists which we’ll be featuring soon, Lukid and Alec k. redfearn and The Eyesores . Enjoy!
