I’ve known GreensKeepers for a long time, mainly with their house music efforts, so before I get to check their latest Polo Club release thanks to the Dinamo.FM guys, I thought this was yet another dance album as I was accostumed to. In a strange tale of serendipity, the first song I played was “Bloodclots” where words like “purgatory”, “reprisal” and “raining blood” flicked by. After a short amount of processing time, it dawned on me that these are lyrics from the infamous Slayer song Raining Blood, from the Reign in Blood album, one of the alltime best metal albums ever.
I began to laugh like hell instantly, Araya’s blistering fast vocals and King & Hannemann’s thundering guitars were recouped by funky horns and laidback rhythms. In a state of shock and awe, I listened to other tracks from the album. There was no generic house music at all, most songs have a tongue in cheek / fun loving attitude with simple beats, rock riffs and pop hooks. There’s even Huey Lewis & The News‘ most famous “I Want A New Drug” which goes (I want a new drug/One that wont hurt my head/One that wont make my mouth too dry/Or make my eyes too red) made into a slower electropop piece but my greatest obsession is Love Lobotomy with the rolling bass that’s equally suited for the dance floor.
It seems Chicago’s GreensKeepers has found gold on this Om Records release, I know it’s not as sophisticated as some of the stuff I review here, but in an age where pop culture and music has penetrated so much into our houses, I wanted to give props to GK who at least do it right and make it witty & fun at the same time.
PS: I can’t believe the “Greenskeepers bloodclots slayer” query gives no return, has no one noticed that this is the lyrics to Raining Blood?. Here’s the original song, now you can see the boys have been creative!.
