Deejay OM

Whooo, it’s time to review one of my favourite CDs from 2007 just before it gets a regular western world release on Galapagos4, a leftfield hiphop label that slipped through my filters this year, with artists like Mike Gao and Mestizo. I’d like to introduce you to Deejay OM’s eclectic postmodern masterpiece “Reheated Naan and Curry” (if you have no problems with sitars & tablas, that is).

Deejay OM, based in San Francisco, CA, has been a DJ and producer for over 14 years. “He is known to have a deep love for yoga, meditation, cooking fine vegan cuisine, art, and of course, music. He has produced music for films (Thrasher videos & movie soundtracks), performed with Z-trip, Shortkut (of Invisible Scratch Pickles), The Pharcyde, Ghostface Killah and , Madlib and many others.”

I played 2 tracks from the album on show#9 the first one including a Baris Manco vocal snippet even!. “Reheated Naan and Curry” is a mashup of hiphop beats spiced with Bollywood disco samples through a psychedelic 70s vision. It’s like an accessible Porest that’s not hellbent on destroying the west. I can’t stress how much I like the album, 20 tracks with dope beats & Indian percussion and funny names like “Dancing with the Ladies of Bombay” or “Joy, Oh! Oh! The Bengal Tiger“, this is like a time travel through 70’s India with a microbus and some microdot and experiencing the western culture getting reshaped by the east.
