Thrill Jockey mammoth Trans Am has a new album out named “Sex Change”. Arguably one of the most prominent bands of the 90s alongside Tortoise and Labradford, their new album is interestingly radiofriendly somewhat opposed to their eclectic musical tastes. Frankly I’ve never been a huge fan of synth + rock, or new wave, or the arena electronic aesthetic of MTV’s pop acts, but this album caught me totally offguard.

Sex Change” is a mature album with synths integrated into driving rock songs, a little bit of new wave attitude here and there, lots of pop sensibility and catchy hooks, and a diverse music getting inspiration from various sources as far as funk & disco or UK electronica, albeit a little bit too glossy perhaps. However I’m pretty sure this should be an example of the decent the pop/rock music we love to hear and not the pseudoelectro crap with no original idea that’s being pumped out by Majors. It also stands tall as an album as well, because all the songs here are worth hearing on their own. Here’s a quote from ILX

I love this to death. It’s like this boring muscular post-rock band suddenly discovered DURAN DURAN and decided to do a disco album. I could never make it through a whole Trans Am album before. Now I can. Hurrah!
