Marnie Stern

She taps her guitar happily

I got to spill my guts, NYC’s Marnie Stern is my new obsession with her furious debut “In Advance of the Broken Arm” on Kill Rock Stars. Just as you think every musical aesthetic has been covered, someone comes along and shows you that the human creativity has no bounds. Assisted a whole lot by Hella’s Zach Hill on drums (musically as well as aesthetically), this album goes by at a frantic speed and leaves you begging for more of the same.

The chaotic homegrown guitar riffs and funny lyrics on her debut are a salute to all the geek girls worldwide, with highly complex layers of guitarwork crafted into some kind of noisy indie pop (that girls are better at!). She also looks incredibly smart and cool, just watch how she plays the rhythm section on an ipod mini while finger tapping the guitar madly with a smile on her face, easy! I hope those fingers don’t get sore soon. Make sure you listen to this sensational album if you’re into Hella, Deerhoof, Melt Banana, Afrirampo etc.

her herky-jerky, intricate songwriting, and adrenaline-charged vocal delivery makes for a sound somewhere between an air-raid siren, a jackhammer, and pure bliss. (other music)

Wow! This is probably the best thing we’ve heard on Kill Rock Stars in AGES. With totally spazzed out guitar playing and impassioned vocals, Marnie Stern has grabbed us by the throats and refuses to let us go. (aquarius records)
