I’m flat out sure that Field Music will be one of the bands you’ll be hearing a lot in 2007. In fact it’s become quite the sensation till now as I’m definitely not the first to feature them. I’ve been enjoying “Tones of Town“, their second effort on Memphis Industries, thanks to a review on Other Music.
The trio of Brothers Peter and David Brewis with added help from Andrew Moore comes from Sunderland, and their sound inevitably brings memories of The Beatles & The Who or even Madness to mind. Probably because their music & humour is essentially English.
The real gift of Tones of Town is in their exceptional arrangements & songwriting skills. This can effortlessly be called “prog pop” because they are thinking out-of-the-box and writing some clever music but still making all of the songs more than likeable to the point that you’ll begin to sing along after at most two listens. It’s a kick in the face of the plastic mainstream formulaic pop (or indie rock) that we’re so used to get these days but it’s obviously for a mature crowd.
The band is pretty hip these days and have performed in Milan with Belle and Sebastian, toured France with Architecture in Helsinki and the UK with Maximo Park. They appeared on Reading & Leeds Festivals and SXSW. I’m surprised that they got low reviews from Stylus (C+ come on) and a semi-low from Pitchfork (7.3) but Drowned in Sound’s review makes up for it. Check for yourself, they’re touring the US in march!
