If you were to ask me which bands were the one with the most established career in the indie / art rock scene, I think I’d easily mention Blonde Redhead at one of the top spots. They’ve constantly rocked since their first album in 1995 and by that time although there were obvious comparisons to Sonic Youth because of their lo-fi aesthetic (Their first 2 albums were indeed produced by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley btw) they had a notable songwriting ability that crafted those fuzzy guitars & screamy vocals into highly melancholic songs. The fuzz has been gradually left out of their sound as they matured, but their posture and the melancholy stays the same.

That said their new album “23″ is going to be out soon, I’ve listened to a few tracks off the album and it felt like meeting old friends and I remembered just how much I missed them. My God those young Italian lads and even Kazu has aged noticeably (but they still look extremely cool) and I thought, today we all have lots of virtual friends and we can listen to tens of new bands in a day, but almost all of them lack character or we simply don’t have time to go into a deeper relationship with them. Listening once again to the characteristic bittersweet voices of Kazu & Amedeo took me to times before the internet, when friendships were more personal and life was more real. Here are some songs from their awesome back catalogue, the songs “I still get rocks off” and “Violent Life” are off 1995’s more artsy La Mia Vita Violenta which is a milestone for my own musical adventure, and the song “The Dress” is off their upcoming album 23 which would once more teach the world how artsy does not equal inaccessible.
