I mixed undomondo radio show #5 today, and then I said why not compile a different lovesongs compilation for Valentine’s. Most of the songs are loosely related to love and not suitable for a Valentine’s of course, but you weren’t expecting a fluffy pink Valentine’s compilation did you?
I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve listened to Cradle of Filth ferventlybefore they become a lame teenage MTV goth band, this track is off their debut album and it’s an ambient piece which is not really up to the other track’s standards but the title of the song got its spot as a starter. The second track by should have been Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher’s “Love to Love you baby”, but I’ve searched my cds far and wide to no avail, so it got replaced by Farben’s lovely minimal stuff. Lovelee Dae was a huge anthem for us back in the day, especially this remix by Isolee, it’s not about love but it’s about lovely days, so I guess it counts. Venetian Snares’ anti love track is here for mindfuck purposes and its title, it’s another mad VS track that’ll blow your mind (literally).
5th track by the legendary R&S and Sugar Minott spreads the dub love and just as you get the universal love vibe, it’s replaced by the 80’s white trash angst of ST, with a blazing track that goes
Baby don’t you be blue
You know that I’ll always be true
You know that I’ll always love you
And we’ll always be together too
Over a thousand things I can say to you
Half of which would be un-true
But the one thing for sure I can say
Is that I won’t fall in love today
Nirvana’s Swap Meet from Bleach was one of the significant love songs for me in my youth (platonic love of course), with the emphasis on
She loves him more than she will ever know
He loves her more than he will ever show”
I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this one on my oldschool Sony walkman. The next song is of course the anti-love anthem by Gang of Four “Love’ll get you like a case of anthrax And that’s something I don’t want to catch“. Then another song by our wacky friends The Aquabats, it’s a total broken heart song from my teen days which says
I just wanted you to come over
Sit on the couch and hold me tight
But you went out with some dumb jock
And left me alone
With my skateboard tonight.
Another song by the now demised pop punk band Kung Fu Monkeys and we finish up with my teenage days. The Moog Cookbook are one of the bands I play only on certain occassions because it’s a real gem, here’s a cover of Van Halen’s “Ain’t talkin bout love” succeeded by a NYC’s Biohazard in which they show you the street love. Now I was pretty sure that Sublime was an OK band, but one day reading ILX I was shocked to see them bashed because their fanbase was lame Orange County pseudo punks, I don’t know, I don’t live in the US so it’s not relevant for me, here’s Scarlet Begonias which talks about a girl, so I think it counts as a love song.
Salmonella Dub is from NZ, (like Fat Freddy’s Drop), this was the first song I listened a few years ago, “we do it for the love of it” explains my mentality in life so well, it’s just another kind of love that’s suitable for this compilation. The next is Buzzcocks‘ anthemic “Ever Fallen in Love” it’s a shame I’m playing a watered down version by Nouvelle Vague (mind ya it’s good) but I couldn’t find the Buzzcocks one near, and the last track is our personal love song between error101 and me, we have fallen in love listening to this song, and I thought I could get a tear in her eye, playing this here years after! Gotcha!
PS: Couldn’t help adding this song from the late Baris Manco, the one and only Turkish superstar, it’s a kraut&prog piece from 68. Enjoy!
