The Konki Duet

The Konki Duet, (worlds only three piece duo?) are three talented & geeky indie girls from Tokyo, St. Petersburg and Paris. I have written about them here last year on a myspace roundup. They’ve got their debut album as a trio, called “Moutain Mouton”, out last november on Active Suspension. A little bit fragile and girlie for a guy who listens to grindcore on spare time I know and I’m pretty much tired of the twee pop experience and geeky indie girls by now but Konki’s are exempt because they’re actually making intriguing arrangements (both melodic & vocal) and there’s some lovely violin work reminiscent of Owen Pallett’s chamber orchestra Final Fantasy, so the music’s much more than the simple pop formula.
If everything’s cool up to now, then let me mention that the thing which sealed the deal with this album for me was, a mindblowingly good cover of Queens of the Stone Age’s No one Knows. Well maybe that was a bit over the top, but it’s always hard to cover such a strong tune as “No one Knows” and I’m pretty happy to see that they’ve taken the song and successfully done something else with it (minus the bridge) then straightforward cover it and be left in QOTSA’s shadow. Props to The Konki Duet for this highly enjoyable album, but please do something with your name next time girls because it really feels awkward.
