I first heard of Brooklyn’s White Magic on Aquarius records‘ newcomers list and the praises it got kinda intrigued me. During the first listen may views changed from “standard freak-folk & indie rock hybrid” to “strangely minimalistic and absorbingly beatiful freaky folk & indie hybrid“. I haven’t been listening to the album for a few days, and when today I put it on to select tracks to post, I recognized that I remember most of the songs (which is an important indicator for my subjective musical appreciation).
I see no need to try to explain Ms. Mira Billotte’s voice and presence to you, it must be felt (you should read this Fader feature if you want lots of more details on the bands background) , but some vocal melodies on “The Light” for example are really very simple and effective and the entrancing monotoneness creates a unique experience. It really speaks to the headbanger inside you! I felt some similarities in sound with “The watery graves of Portland” probably because of the piano integrated in the rock sound or the melancholic and eerie sound, so you should give it a listen if you’re into more indie & rock stuff too.
