Welcome to the wooorlld of tomorrooww!! I wonder if it would be something like a Futurama episode if Matthew Herbert actually met Duke Ellington. Recently i stumbled upon both the 80 Drums exotica and the quite fine Marsalis version of “Caravan“, a Duke Ellington classic and probably one of the most covered songs from the classical jazz era (although not more than Summertime. I don’t think there is a jazz piece covered more than Summertime…).
I then searched more to see what else was around and there he was, none other than our old friend Herb. Although the Herbert take isn’t one of my favourite covers of him, the moral of this review is, it’s interesting when you get the chance to explore how a music piece (or any art form) has it’s own life, and if it’s a solid-enough piece, how it outlives it’s creator and continues to evolve as time goes on. Original piece is from early ’50s, Marsalis version from around ‘87 and Herbert from around ‘04. I don’t have a date for 80 Drums Around the World but i presume it may be from late ’60s. Nevertheless, i think Duke would have enjoyed all this :)
Mersenne’s note: I found 4 more covers, mostly from stuff I downloaded from sharity mp3blogs, there’s a surf version from an Xtabay surf compilation, a Martin Denny exotica, and even a Balkan version by one of our favourite brass ensembles Fanfare Ciocărlia.
