I confess I’ve been indifferent to some genres like dubstep or grime in the past. I’ve always liked dub/reggae as long as it’s not watered down, but the “step” part, “The broken beat of the UK”, is something I’ve never been a fan of, until now!. On Other Music’s latest update, I saw the review to Kode 9 & The Spaceape’s full length CD “Memories of the Future” on Hyperdub, one of the pioneers of the dubstep scene and decided to check it out, and blam!!

From now on I think all the bling MC’s and wannabe’s should open up their ears and listen to The Spaceape. As he’s one of the most powerful MCs I’ve heard for some time. His bass voice and strange Jamaican accent and phrasing is so ominious and domineering, he gives me the creeps like the guy in Saw. With one main difference, Spaceape mostly talks about social justice and human rights, so he’s not a sinister killer but he’s actually on our side!. (Thank God)

The music is dark, cinematic and monotonous, as if made for a movie that takes place in the future and has some kind of religious cult or underground movement in it. You know with biological weapons who kill the wrong doers and stuff like that? The scarce yet immersive melodies sound Middle Eastern sometimes, reminiscent of Fedayi Pacha, I mentioned some time ago. The album has some magical glue that holds all the tracks together, with no dead weight track to skip, but the darkness can make you mentally unstable if you constantly listen to this. So to sum it up I bow down before our Lord Spaceape, whatever he says from now on, I’m bound to obey.
