Covers

Another post by a newcomer who we hope to see on board with his selections from time to time. Tumel’s a music freak from Istanbul, who is mostly into electronic/indie stuff, but he has some classical music, kitsch 80’s pop, and techno under his belt too. Here’s his first post in 2 parts, which feature some cool covers he’s selected.

image from the Senor Coconut event in Istanbul last friday!.

* Alter Ego – All i ever wanted : this one used to be a floor shaker back in ‘01 & ‘02. If you already have an acquintance with the alterego bassline and like it, you need to get this one. If you don’t have the acquintance, you’ve missed a lot in the last decade. this one’s a great rework of the Human League’s classic, released by the legendary Klang Elektronik.

* Tangoterje – Can’t help it : This one’s my favorite of mr. terje’s works. Even though the world’s pretty much more concerned with how thin KoP’s skin is, the pervert’s voice is beautiful.

* Cars can be blue – Teenage mutant ninja turtles : i’m not actually sure how to categorize this duo; well they sound twee and look geeky and have some extremely explicit lyrics. Below’s from their myspace profile;

“Hi, Im Becky and I mostly play the guitar. Im short and I wear glasses. Im a girl. I have my driver’s license. I write most of the songs. Hi, Im Nate and I mostly play the drums. I help Becky write the songs. Im tall and skinny and I also wear glasses. I have psoriasis on my left leg.”

(I don’t like the prepackaged overgeeky appearance and the attitude btw)

* Iron & Wine – Such great heights : Non-mover of the first five spots in global last.fm charts since forever, Postal Service’s Such great heights “obviously” sounds better with the little touch of Iron & Wine. He’s my favorite among the guys with beards (excluding family) by the way.

* Senor Coconut – Rydeen (by yellow magic orchestra) : No need to say how incredible Senor Coconut is; this one’s from the favoriteless pool of übercool covers by Uwe Schmidt. Deep purple’s “Smoke on the Water”, Mj’s “Beat it” and Sade’s “Smooth Operator” are only just a few among the others. The original is from ’80s, Yellow Magic Orchestra (I surely knew some of the music on gameboy was worth listening), regarded as one of the pioneers of electronic music along with Kraftwerk.
