Markus Guentner

So, we’re back from Prague, it was a lovely trip and we have got a very special CD from an old and out of this world street musician, which will hopefully be reviewed here soon, but till then we’re gonna continue with some minimal dance stuff.

Another keyplayer of the European dance scene is German artist Markus Guentner who recently released “Lovely Society” on Matthias Schaffhauser’s Ware label. In contrast with his ambient releases this is a popified deep minimal album, a la M.R.I and Schaffhauser. The album is directed both to groovy dancefloors and cool at-home listening. The 10 minute long “Never want to stop playing that game” is very repetitive but Markus’s groove & rimshots will grab your hips and you’d want the song to go on for hours, (in a way comparable to Vincenzo’s alltime hit “The Way of Thinking”). I wasn’t expecting too much when I started to listen and well it’s not groundbreaking or anything but the songs are truly good and you can put the CD on and actually listen from the beginning to the end without getting bored, and I guess it’s a notable achievement in the era of one hit wonders.

  • Well said, the album's a good one. If you liked the sound, "Such A Shame Remixes" is a must listen back from 2003; also from ware records. I had really liked the female vocals on that one and now as I was looking at the credits, it turned out to be of turkish origin... Shirin Falcke.
  • Wow, that's great stuff! I'd only heard that 1981 12" he put out on Kompakt - this is a lot more intricate.
  • "Never want to stop playing that game"... excellent, awesome track. Heard it in a mix from these guys in NYC, "robot love"?

    cheers man.
