I had never thought that one day I’ll be writing about Kelis, although I had loved her milkshake song back in the day and I was impressed that a mainstream artist has got such a good song. I checked her new album that recently got released after I watched her first video. I haven’t listened it from beginning to end, but it seems to be a nice effort. The sexy title track “Bossy” gets cranked everywhere so you have probably heard it. Here’s a song that displays her musical diversity. This is not as energetic as the title track and not directed to the dancefloors, it’s got an acid jazz vibe with guitars & laidback bass that seems to have come out of Madlib’s hand. Lyrically it’s a reflective portrait of Kelis’ own life in the music biz, some freshness we’re all waiting for as most of the mainstream hiphop scene is only talking about bling bling. If you liked Kelis’ previous stuff, you can buy this album comfortably.
