First Nation

Hailing from Animal Collective’s record label Paw Tracks who also hosts artists like Ariel Pink and Terrestrial Tones, First Nation has been THE band of August for me. I’ve failed to get this bloody Female Trance out of my head for a long time, and now it’s your turn dear readers. Comparisons to Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance are drawn everywhere on the net and I think that’s true, especially some of the guitar parts sound like GGC’s exotic parts. But in my mind this all girl trio is playing music more like Deerhoof.

Sloppy beats, unforgettable (!) melodic guitar licks, lots of female vocals and poppy songs, although the sound is cleaner and the music is not as distorted. The song Female Trance definitely jumps out of the album being a perfect song with tender guitar parts leading the song and the flute entering in 1:50, one of my favourite songs in 2006 for sure. The rest of the album is quite cool as well, but sometimes the whole sloppy, staggering thing and the vocals may bore you, yeah a little bit more energy in some songs and I humbly think the second album can be a classic.
